One, 45-year-old Azahari Husin - said by the terrorism expert Clive Williams to be "a known skilled bomb-maker" - is a British-trained engineer with a PhD who received extensive bomb training in Afghanistan.
He was thought to have written the JI bomb manual used in the Bali bombings in October 2002.
The other, 33-year-old Noordin Mohammed Top, is a JI administrator and key planner of the Bali attacks.
