Maverick running for president under 'Christian Freedom Party' banner
Associated Press
ST. PAUL - A maverick former DFLer who's running for president under the banner of his self-styled "Christian Freedom Party" says he knows he can't win.
Thomas Harens, a public-relations entrepreneur and self-described "flake," will be on the presidential ballot only in Minnesota. He said he doesn't know whether he will get just a few votes or enough to affect who gets Minnesota's 10 electoral votes.
Harens acknowledged that his new party's name might draw votes from President Bush, the Republican who has strong support among conservative evangelical Christians.
But he said his party is pitching its appeal to liberal or "progressive Christians," who oppose the war in Iraq and favor social justice and stronger environmental protections.
