Cheney defends U.S. invasion of Iraq

LAURA MECKLER, Associated Press Writer
Thursday, September 9, 2004

(09-09) 14:16 PDT CINCINNATI (AP) --

Vice President Dick Cheney on Thursday defended the U.S. invasion of Iraq, saying Saddam Hussein harbored al-Qaida terrorists and others and again connecting the war to the Sept. 11 attacks.

Cheney skimmed over President Bush's principal justification for going to war: that Saddam harbored weapons of mass destruction and planned to use them. No such weapons were found in Iraq.

The bipartisan commission that investigated the attacks cited contacts between Saddam's regime and al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden, but said there was no "collaborative relationship" before the terrorist strikes.

Cheney spoke to about 500 invited supporters at a town-hall meeting and answered about a half dozen friendly questions in this conservative section of this contested swing state.

3. Kerry has to really go after this 911/Iraq crap and hammer it...this
is the problem with a large chunk of voters...they believe this.
For once and for all, can we please have our guys totally trash this 24/7????

That and the vote "for the Iraq war"--- please repeat nonstop that giving "authority" is not a vote FOR a war....

Then link both of these situations...the lie about 911/Iraq and the "not being able to trust Bush with authority because he's a F*CKING liar" ...as issues of CHARACTER!!!!

4. This would make a great Democratic commercial....
showing repeats of bush* and cheney saying saddam/911 over and over and over and end with "The 9/11 Commission found no connection between AlQueda and Saddam". Make them eat their words and educate the few left that still believe this BS.

5. Cheney offers pitiful excuses, they chose war way before 9/11.
We went into Iraq in the wost possible way, poor planning and inadequate resources continue to define what this mess has become.
And, still, they blame terrorism, something this administration dismissed from the very beginning. Despite being clearly warned, they had other priorities and couldn't be bothered to be thoughtfully prudent.

<Cheney recounted the invasion of Afghanistan after the attacks, in which the United States punished the Taliban for harboring al-Qaida. Then he said, "In Iraq, we had a similar situation."

Saddam, he said, "provided safe harbor and sanctuary for terrorists for years," including al-Qaida.>
