Son of Late Officer Questions Bush Memos
DALLAS - The authenticity of newly unearthed memos stating that George W. Bush failed to meet standards of the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War was questioned Thursday by the son of the late officer who reportedly wrote the memos.

"I am upset because I think it is a mixture of truth and fiction here," said Gary Killian, son of Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, who died in 1984.

Gary Killian, who served in the Guard with his father and retired as a captain in 1991, said one of the memos, signed by his father, appeared legitimate. But he doubted his father would have written another, unsigned memo which said there was pressure to "sugar coat" Bush's performance review.

What's going on here? Is it possible they were faked?

3. Sounds like CBS covered their butts before they put the story out. As
you can imagine they would have to. I bet the son is a Bush supporter. Trying to fix it for him and be a hero. He doesn't understand Bush expects people to cover for him. He isn't grateful.

5. Weren't these released by the White House?
...Why would someone from the WH authorize the release of negative documents that were faked? Is that to throw people off the scent by making something up that is so obviously faked that the entire stream of evidence would then appear to be falsified thus creating skepticism over the whole issue? Man, that involves so many lies that it makes my head swim.

6. "The White House did not question their accuracy" - same (short) article
Edited on Thu Sep-09-04 08:28 PM by nu_duer
CBS stood by its reporting. "As is standard practice at CBS News, the documents in the 60 Minutes report were thoroughly examined and their authenticity vouched for by independent experts," CBS News said in a statement. "As importantly, 60 Minutes also interviewed close associates of Colonel Jerry Killian. They confirm that the documents reflect his opinions and actions at the time."

The White House distributed the four memos from 1972 and 1973 after obtaining them from CBS News. The White House did not question their accuracy.
----------------------

Sheesh. They're not fake docs.

This is rove, via a willing son of the man in question, trying to muddy things, as is his trademark.

The records, the records other than these memos, tell a clear tale.

bush is a fucking rich, privileged, spoiled, murderous coward.

And anybody with a tv and a vcr can document that.

7. But if they can be proven fake. . . .
they could cast doubt on the legitimate stuff.

11. I don't see how they could be proven fake
Not with CBS News pouring over them like they have.

At most, the bush drones can try to call them into question.

And those efforts are ok w/ me. Whatever keeps the story alive.

8. Brett Bozell and Rich Lowry have been out defending *
and questioning the validity of the docs and memos so that leads me to the conclusion that they are real. Rove is just trying to cast a shadow of a doubt in the publics mind. I dont think it will work, cant unring this bell.
