Aide: Bush Faith Has Been Misunderstood
WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites)'s religious faith is "mainstream America" and no different from previous presidents, the director of his Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives said Friday.

"The president's faith has been misunderstood," said the White House aide, Jim Towey. "I don't see him as any different from his predecessors, both Democrats and Republicans." Towey cited Democrats Jimmy Carter and Franklin Roosevelt.

"There's a double standard in the way these matters are covered," said Towey, a Roman Catholic and onetime aide to the late Democratic Florida Gov. Lawton Chiles. Towey was speaking to the Religion Newswriters Association, whose members report on the field for secular media.

He said of Bush, "He's so mainstream America on matters of faith" and similar to people who pray privately "in restaurants, out on their farms and in their small businesses

2. Does "mainstream America" have God talk to them?
He is close to mainstream though, a lot of hypocrytes. But I think his "faith" is a load of shit.

3. Absolutely.
most Americans want a new crusade, get messages on policy from God,
oppose lifesaving science, and deny global warming.

Of course, most Americans who are 'average' are also dumb as paint. Coincidence? You decide.

5. Faith-based governance?
I for one don't want a leader whose decisions are based on faith in anything except the verifiable facts in the situation. Make the decision based on the evidence, then pray if you want to that you made the right call. The scariest phrase for me is "praying for guidance".

7. Outside of those who should be medicated...
... I hear very, very, very few people who say that "God speaks through" them. Or that God tells them to start wars ("God told me to strike Saddam and I did").

Mainstream? Time for his staffers to stop making him sound like Joe Average and check his psychological dipstick. He's a couple of quarts low.

8. what the fuck is this guy talking about?
first of all -- if bush describes him self as born again -- that is NOT main stream america.
secondly -- main strem america may very well think bush{believe me, beats the hell out of me} is just fine. so why even talk about it and sound like mental mush the way this guy is.
