General: Bin Laden Still Issuing Orders
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=516&e=3&u=/ap/20040911/ap_on_re_as/afghan_al_qaida_3

BAGRAM, Afghanistan - Three years after the Sept. 11 attacks, Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) and his deputy are still issuing orders for attacks by al-Qaida, a top American commander told The Associated Press Saturday. Maj. Gen. Eric Olson said that an al-Qaida linked group was suspected of a deadly car bombing at a U.S. security firm in the Afghan capital last month. He said the attack was a suicide mission.

"There are senior leaders of al-Qaida that are working through operatives in Afghanistan (news - web sites)," Olson told The Associated Press in an interview. "They are involved in planning and in some cases directing attacks inside of Afghanistan."

Olson, the operational commander of U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan, said the military had no fix on the whereabouts of either bin Laden or al-Qaida No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahri. But the involvement of well-trained foreign fighters in attacks near the Pakistani border convinced him that the fugitive leaders were pulling the strings.

4. Sorry, But After Seeing The Latest AQ "New Release"...
I think he is dead. It is advantageous for both AQ and the terra fighters to keep everyone thinking he is alive.

8. he may not be in the videos anymore
because he knows that causes the us to hunt him more. The more he's on tv, the more pressure on Bush to get him.

6. He admits he doesn't know anything of the sort

"What we see are their techniques and their tactics here in Afghanistan, so I think it is reasonable to assume that the senior leaders are involved in directing those operations," he said.

He is just drawing an inference, which may or may not be reasonable, and may or may not be true.

On edit - I could just as easily say I know Elvis is still alive, since I hear people use his "techniques and tactics" while they sing.

7. Bush made sure the public forgot about Osama
Gotta remind the American people that the boogeyman is out there planning his next attack before revealing the big October surprise.

14. Welcome MFD!!!
:hi:

Yup. I agree that ObL has become something akin to a fictional "bad" guy: one used to justify the lawlessness our own despots have practiced. He is a neocon's best friend, really.

9. How about this?
Breaking News: New intelligence has intercepted an Al-Queda seance in which Bin Laden was contacted in the after life. Looking pale and grey but determined in the crystal ball, Bin Laden ordered the destruction of infidels all over the world and Americans. A senior Dept of Homeland Security official who asked not to be identified, said the image in the crystal ball and the voice from the seance is believed to be authentic.

The President has said he believes this is 'darn good' intelligence and proves Al-Quaeda won't let a small thing like death stop them from terrorizing 'muricans'. When he was asked "then how are you going to win the war on terror?", one of his political operatives grabbed the questioner by the hair and started stomping her.

-Sigh-

The fact that today this doesn't sound like the fictional, proposterous story that it is, is very sad.

10. Is Osam bin Laden stupid?
If he is still along the Pakistan border he would be stupid.
The CIA has stated that they feel that he escaped during the Bora Bora onslaught and took a boat to Indonesia. Also, Osama denies that he has a kidney problem. No one has proven that he does. Dead or alive he is an Icon to millions. He may be villan #1 to millions of Americans but he is a hero to millions of Muslims. The fact the GW Bush never mentions his name anymore indicates something. What could that be?

11. I guess

I'm not sure I know the answer to the question or what you are really getting at.

Perhaps the October "I'm not so Surprise(d)" will produce Osama alive in time for an election boost.

My little diatribe was a (lame) attempt at satire on how this administration takes every situation and spins it in the media and seemingly normal people eat it up.

13. three year, billions of dollars, and they can't find a 6'4" guy
toting around a dialysis machine.

and bush wants to be rewarded with four more years?

osama's probably safely tucked away in a bin laden family compound. yeah, the same bin laden family who signs poppy bush's paychecks.

why isn't the kerry campaign pointing to bush's saudi connection? that slimy detail should be enough to sink w.
