Ivan Holds CAT 5 Strength, pressure down to 912.
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCPAT4+shtml/112357.shtml?

>>MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 165 MPH...270 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER
GUSTS. IVAN IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS CATEGORY FIVE HURRICANE ON
THE SAFFIR/SIMPSON HURRICANE SCALE. SOME FLUCTUATIONS IN INTENSITY
ARE LIKELY DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS.

HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 70 MILES... 110 KM...
FROM THE CENTER...AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP
TO 175 MILES...280 KM.

AN AIR FORCE RESERVE UNIT HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT MEASURED A
MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE OF 912 MB...26.93 INCHES. THIS IS THE
SIXTH LOWEST CENTRAL PRESSURE ON RECORD FOR A HURRICANE IN THE
ATLANTIC BASIN.

COASTAL STORM SURGE FLOODING OF 20 TO 25 FEET...LOCALLY HIGHER...
ABOVE NORMAL TIDE LEVELS...ALONG WITH LARGE AND DANGEROUS BATTERING
WAVES...CAN BE EXPECTED NEAR AND TO THE EAST OF WHERE THE CENTER
MAKES LANDFALL IN CUBA.<<

Just full of good news. Caymens = owned.

1. 165mph..
Man, that is definitely one of the most intense hurricanes I have ever seen....

If this was in the Pacific.. it'd be caled a "super-typhoon"

If I had to get a direct hit, I'm glad I got it from Frances and not this baby...

Heyo

4. And inland isn't going to fare so well either, with the fallout of
this baby. (That's me -- up near Atlanta. And a LOT of other people too.)

My prayers for those along those coast who end up having to deal with this. A 20 - 25 foot storm surge is impossible for me to visualize.

But global warming is just a myth. I wanted to be sure and point that out. This is just a "normal" 40-year (or whatever, blah blah blah) fluctuation in hurricane activity. /sarcasm

7. There is a chart I will find you
It shows that hurricanes are stronger with higher carbon dioxide levels.

said this is one of the strongest hurricanes ( in the top 5) observed since modern weather recording methods were introduced. Not good at all for anyone in the path of this one! :scared: and :grouphug: to all affected by Ivan!

5. Where's the discussion of global warming?
Edited on Sat Sep-11-04 08:14 PM by DanSpillane
Instead of talking about old war notes, why aren't we talking about global warming, and the fact that the sea is one degree warmer than it should be, and that we know that warmer seas and higher carbon dioxide lead to more powerful hurricanes?

This is the wave of the future, folks. Read the research yourselves.

And what about the fact that they were overbuilding into a housing bubble in Florida, without proper insurance coverage. Did you guys read about that? And housing inflation isn't properly accounted for, nor insurance coverage, in the inflation indices?

Oh yeah, what about Bush's tax break for SUVs, and Zell Miller's exemptions??? They should be held responsible for helping create these hurricanes. Science tells us the oil use and SUVs produce problems which lead us to these kind of massively destructive hurricanes.

9. IMPORTANT! NEW INFO ON GLOBAL WARMING AND HURRICANES
Edited on Sat Sep-11-04 08:28 PM by DanSpillane
This is REALLY important, some NEW HURRICANES coming from SOUTH ATLANTIC!!

This info is NOT being covered by the US media, but IS being covered in the UK--

New symptoms

Hurricane Catarina
As any textbook will tell you hurricanes do not occur in the South Atlantic - >>>until March 26 this year(2004)<<<, that is. Turning the opposite way to hurricanes north of the Equator, the storm defied the claim there was not enough of the right conditions of wind and a warm water surface to create a hurricane. It came ashore in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina on 28 March with winds, estimated by the US National Hurricane Center, of near 90mph, causing much damage to property and some loss of life. It will now be the most studied hurricane in history and an entirely new area of ocean will have to be monitored for new storms.

Fish patterns
Sea temperatures have a dramatic effect on the type of fish that live and breed in any body of water. Cod the traditional cold water species which live around British coasts are in trouble because of over fishing but also because of sea temperature rises. Best breeding years tend to be when the water is coldest and there is evidence that cod no longer breed in the English Channel and less and less in the southern North sea. The red snapper, better known in Mediterranean waters, is increasingly being caught off the West Country and in the Channel. Other warm water species including sharks are also visting Corwall in the summer.

San Rafael Glacier, Patagonian Chile
The glacier flows westwards from the North Patagonian icecap at around 17 metres a day, cutting through rainforests, and calves spectacularly into the Laguna San Rafael from a 70m high vertical ice cliff. The icebergs that are produced are often 100m long. The ice front of the glacier has receded over 1km since the early 1990s and iceberg calving activity has dramatically reduced. Scientists believe this is entirely due to temperature rise in the region and that soon the glacier will recede up the mountain away from the sea.

24. There ave been a couple of hurricanes in the South Atlantic
They're rare, but they exist. Besides, the reason hurricanes don't form in the South Atlantic, according to the National Weather Service, is because of wind shear, not temperature.

That said, I think we need to be keeping a lid on global warming instead of ducking under our blankets.

Andrew's millibars were 922. Camille 909. The "winner" is the Labor Day hurricane that hit Key West in 1935. Millibars - 892.

17. Hurricane Gilbert, 1988
Edited on Sat Sep-11-04 09:06 PM by notsodumbhillbilly
had a pressure of 888 mb, the lowest pressure ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere. However, it hit Cancun first, and by the time it moved into the US had lost strength although it still caused considerable damage.

11. Another CRITICAL piece from the UK--
WATER is WARMER and it "MIGHT LAST FOR DECADES"!!!!!!!

The meteorologists say there is more to come. The warming of the Atlantic that began last year is likely to linger for a couple of decades, creating large numbers of hurricanes.

14. Whoa!
When they put it like that!

And this on blair..

"At the same time Tony Blair will make his own speech on global warming but will not directly criticise President Bush. However, he will not shy away from pointing out his well-known disagreement with the White House over global warming. 'It's obvious when it comes to issues like climate change that there are differences,' said a Downing Street source.

Blair has been repeatedly urged by ministers to make more of his differences with Bush to show voters he is capable of standing up to the Republican right on issues of principle. However, he has less room for manoeuvre than Howard, who has already burnt his bridges with the White House after a public spat prompted by the Bush administration's refusal to grant him photo opportunities with the President."

Zeller gave a break to SUVs; Bush gave another tax break to SUVs last year!!!!

This could change the election, if the stupid powers to be would quit talking about things thirty years ago!

23. that's what I fear.
If the New Orleans pumping system is put underwater, that water will just sit there. Opening up the spillways won't help any, and New Orleans would be permanently under 8 to 10 feet of water. That's creepy.

28. Fortunately for Halliburton their loses will be minimal.
They may sustain damage to a post office box. Not really worth filing an insurance claim.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/01/22/60minutes/main595214.shtml

"60 Minutes decided to ask Halliburton's subsidiary about its work in Iran. But we weren't allowed to enter the building with a camera. So we went in with a hidden camera, and were introduced to David Walker, manager of the local Calidonian Bank, where the subsidiary is registered.

60 Minutes was expecting to find a bustling business, but, to our surprise, Walker told us that while Halliburton Products and Services was registered at this address, it was in name only. There is no actual office here or anywhere else in the Caymans. And there are no employees on site.

We were told that if mail for the Halliburton subsidiary comes to this address, they re-route it to Halliburton headquarters in Houston."

5am THE AIRCRAFT REPORTS A SECONDARY WIND MAXIMUM 27 N MI FROM THE
CENTER WHICH COULD BE THE START OF ANOTHER EYEWALL REPLACEMENT
CYCLE. THEREFORE THE WIND SPEED IS FORECAST TO INCREASE TO 145 KT
AT 12 AND 24 HOURS.
