The Observer

A furious row has broken out over claims in a new book by BBC broadcaster James Naughtie that US Secretary of State Colin Powell described neo-conservatives in the Bush administration as 'fucking crazies' during the build-up to war in Iraq.
Powell's extraordinary outburst is alleged to have taken place during a telephone conversation with Foreign Secretary Jack Straw. The two became close friends during the intense negotiations in the summer of 2002 to build an international coalition for intervention via the United Nations. The 'crazies' are said to be Vice-President Dick Cheney, Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and his deputy, Paul Wolfowitz.

Last week, the offices of Powell and Straw contacted Public Affairs, the US publishers of Naughtie's book, to say they would vigorously deny the claims if publication went ahead. But as no legal action was threatened, the US launch of the book, The Accidental American: Tony Blair and the Presidency, will proceed as planned this week.

(...snip...)

EDIT: Emphasis.

2. That's hilarious
Powell seems to be a pretty weak person if he truly objects. Personally I think he's playing both sides as he's done so well throughout his career.

4. Powell will have an interesting book out in a few years
He'll really unload on Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and the neo-con slimeballs. And he will be harder for the Bush Crime Family to trash than Richard Clarke or Paul O'Neil.

7. How can he do that?
Admit he was a willing dupe for the BFEE? Take the blame for the blood that has spilled in part due to his performance at the UN?

Ain't gonna happen.

8. Suggested title: "How I Fucked the World for the People I Hated"
I wouldn't trust that man to the door under an armed guard. If he believes in anything other than currying favor by being a good and trusted button-man, I sure as hell haven't seen it.

He knows he's done extreme evil for duplicitous maniacs, yet somehow sees some odd virtue to this. Now THAT'S conservatism: stolid, unquestioning allegiance to something that doesn't make sense on its own terms. He's Rudolf Hess; any day now, he'll steal a Messerschmidt and try to fly to Pakistan to make a deal with Bin Laden; the only problem is finding a flight helmet big enough to fit over his Napoleon hat.

Somehow, the same strain of leftists and moderates who still think this guy isn't an enemy of civilization think the same of McCain, and this is one of the boggling reminders of the sad quandary of the human condition.

9. yes, the people like Colin Powell are the enablers of evil
because he's in a position to actually do something about it, yet he plays along.

Makes me sick.

13. Powell is known by the company he keeps.
I've had zero respect for him since February of last year.

It'd have to be a HELL of a mitigating factor to make me change my mind.

6. While the floodgates open,...Powell will save himself,...
,...per his mode of operation his whole lie,...I mean, life.

I've "heard" that,...outside "the people" and within the "powers that be",...there is shit hitting walls.

Meanwhile,...*smile*,...the rest of us,...are hunkering this freakin' storm!!!!

I am of the "never give up" camp.

10. Gutless coward
Whatever happened to the Colin Powell who served with distinction in Vietnam? This guy has become just so much Jell-O. If he had had any cojones at all he would have come forward with what he knew about the fakery Cheney and his band were engaged in prior to attacking Iraq.

He knew it was all bullshit. He did nothing. In my estimation he deserves less respect than Cheney, Rummy, and Wolfie. Screw him.

16. Vietnam Distinction? SHITE Powell Covered up My Lai Massacre in NAM!!!!!
Why don't you get your history straight on this subject. When Colin was a Major in the Army in Vietnam he directly covered-up the My Lai village Massacre by U.S. Troops as a Superior oversee officer!

If Seymour Hersh of the New Yorker magazine had not blown the lid off that deal to the public the next year in 1969, hell the public, thanks to Colin Powell, would have never found out about that atrocity!

It's one of the reasons that a Judge overturned Lt. William Calley's life murder conviction sentence, and President Nixon later legally pardoned Calley in full for being the commanding officer in charge of, and participating in, the Massacre.

None of this is a secret, as it has been well documented and published. Let’s your fingers do the walking!
