Report: Major Explosion in North Korea
Large Explosion Reported in Northern Part of North Korea; No Word on Fatalities or Injuries

The Associated Press

SEOUL, South Korea Sept. 11, 2004 — A large explosion occurred in the northern part of North Korea on an important anniversary of the communist regime, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported Sunday.

Citing an unidentified source in Beijing, Yonhap said the explosion happened on Thursday in Yanggang province near the border with China. The damage and crater left by the explosion in Kim Hyong Jik county was big enough to be noticed by a satellite, the source said.

5. Article says it happened on Thursday
If a nuke, then South Korea and Russia have already detected radioactive ions and Washington knows. Of course they won't tell us.

I oppose the US getting involved with anymore bullshit preemptive wars, but I hope that someday the North Korean people will rise up and destroy that evil regime.

14. I think this is the same story as this one (nuke cloud spotted?)
Edited on Sat Sep-11-04 11:13 PM by htuttle
Both were reportedly in Yanggang province:

A reliable source in Seoul's diplomatic community says Sunday a mushroom cloud with a radius of 3.5 to 4 kilometers was spotted in Kimhyongjik County in North Korea's northernmost inland province of Yanggang on Sept. 9.

26. Mushroom Cloud does not equal nuclear bomb
Any large explosion can result in a mushroom shaped cloud. Unless someone detects radiation, it could be a large conventional explosion.

That would take an unimaginable amount of conventional explosives.

Technically possible? Yes.

31. ummm....that's a pretty big cloud!
You could get a big one from a volcanic eruption, meteor impact, etc. But coming on a significant date makes it unlikely to be an accident or act of God.

I know the conventional MOAB bomb is large enough to create a big mushroom cloud.

Considering that we must be monitoring NK very closely it's interesting that this happened on Thursday and is only being reported now. A very large explosion would have been detected by civilian scientists.

What the hell are those crazy North Koreans doing?

18. Iraq, of course, was a greater danger to America and the world
:eyes:

This Administration turned a blind eye to North Korea while they invaded a country that wasn't even a threat to us.

I am so glad that we are protected by such a competent and strong President /sarcasm

21. Hell no we shouldn't invade NK.
That's a very difficult target, to say the least. Even if it doesn't have nukes and doesn't use either its chemical or biological weapons.

23. North Korea, Iran and any other "rogue" nation's only hope for
survival against the US is to become nuclear powers. I used to work in the jail and the main reason the inmates made shanks was to protect themselves from the other inmates who had shanks. Countries do the same. Bomb for bomb. Nuke for nuke. Gas for gas. Germ for germ. Thanks, Bush. We could have been working on nuclear non-proliferation, instead we're headed for the apocolypse.

25. Radiation would be detectable
If it was a nuclear bomb the radiation would be easily detected. I won't believe it was a nuclear bomb until I see a report about radiation.

Big blast reported in North Korea

A big explosion rocked a northern province of North Korea near the border with China last week, South Korea's Yonhap new agency is reporting.

The blast on Thursday was seen from a satellite, Yonhap quoted an unnamed source in Beijing as saying.

The cause has yet to be determined, the source said.
