SYDNEY (AFP) - A top minister said that Australia's military involvement in Iraq may have helped make it a terrorist target, three days after a deadly bombing at its Jakarta embassy.

....

Speaking on Channel Nine's Sunday talk program, Anderson added that Australia had been a terrorist target long before and the attack did not mean that its foreign policy should be altered.

Prime Minister John Howard was one of the strongest overseas supporters of the US-led invasion of Iraq last year and the issue is a potent one in the campaign for the October 9 general election.

Opposition leader Mark Latham has pledged to withdraw Australian troops from Iraq if his Labor Party wins.

Anderson denies Australia at higher terrorism risk

The Deputy Prime Minister has issued a statement denying Australia could be at greater risk of terrorism because of its involvement in Iraq.John Anderson was questioned this morning on Channel Nine about comments from United States Defence secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, who has suggested terrorists would target Coalition countries.

Mr Anderson said at the time, those who have been prepared to stand up will be identified whether it is for propaganda purposes or whether it is reality. He now says there has been no intelligence to suggest Australia is more of a target since the Iraq war, and Australia was a target for terrorists long before the conflict.

Mr Anderson says his comment related to the view that members of Jemaah Islamiah may have made Australia a particular focus of their hatred.

4. It truly distresses me
when I read of these adolescent revelations from alleged "adult" politicians. Their skewed sense of reality and narrow views when dealing with geopolitical matters are astounding
