Edwards: Bush Implied Saddam-9/11 Link

"Today, Secretary of State (Colin) Powell made clear that there is no connection between Saddam Hussein and the attacks on September the 11th," Edwards said before an AFL-CIO rally. "From this day forward, this administration should never suggest that there is."

The North Carolina senator was referring to Powell's comments on NBC's "Meet the Press" in which the Republican reiterated a statement made by Bush last September that the administration has no evidence that Saddam was involved in the attacks.

"We know that there had been connections and there had been exchanges between al-Qaida and the Saddam Hussein regime. And those have been pursued and looked at," Powell said. "But I have seen nothing that makes a direct connection between Saddam Hussein and that awful regime and what happened on 9/11."

Bush said last Sept. 17 that "there's no question that Saddam Hussein had al-Qaida ties." But at the same time the president said, "We've had no evidence that Saddam Hussein was involved with September the 11th."

1. It's long past time to squash that phony bs
This should have been said more than a month ago, when Cheney last dropped this bogus claim at a fundraiser.

The public was misled regarding the motivation for this war.

5. True, Anubis, but
he was nicely contradicted by Powell. THAT's what we need to focus on.

Just calling your opponent a liar is so common in politics that it doesn't get much traction. Pointing out that the administration is speaking out of both sides of its mouth is stronger.

Powell did us a favor, and Edwards did a great job of calling for an end to the Bushit. Let's see if they speak up next time Bush mentions Saddam in the same breath as 9/11.

6. Transcript from Meet The Press--Powell denies link between Iraq and 9/11
This is front page stuff--so I will continue to post it.

From 9/12 Meet The Press:
http://www.scoop.co.nz/mason/stories/WO0409/S00160.htm
MR. RUSSERT: Yesterday, very painful memories of September 11th, parents and grandparents, remembering their loved ones. Henry Hyde, the Chairman of the House International Relations Committee, said this on Thursday, "There is a direct connection between the war in Iraq and the bombing of September 11th. Our response to that bombing of September 11th was Iraq and based on the best information available." Is that true?

SECRETARY POWELL: I have no indication that there was a direct connection between the terrorist who perpetrated these crimes against us on the 11th of September, 2001, and the Iraqi regime. We know that there had been connections and there had been exchanges between al-Qaida and the Saddam Hussein regime and those have been pursued and looked at, but I have seen nothing that makes a direct connection between Saddam Hussein, that awful regime, and what happened on 9/11.

7. Maybe George isn't lying but the reality is just too complicated ...
... for him to remember.

Powell, on the other hand, is probably playing his carefully scripted part in Rove's sleazy game exactly as written.
