Her 25-minute campaign speech prompted the East Stroudsburg Area School District to cancel afternoon classes for fear that the presidential motorcade would tie up traffic and put school buses off schedule, said assistant superintendent Mike Michaels.
But some parents said the canceled classes sent them scrambling to line up daycare for delighted children.
"We have a house full of kids right now - we're providing emergency daycare, and we only have one (child) of our own," said a harried Pam Jackson, whose third-grade grandson, Patrick, was let out of school at noon.
"We spend a lot of time telling our children how important school is, how important it is for them to do well," said Jackson, a former teacher. "And then out of nowhere, because of the needs of a politician, it's OK for them to miss school? This is nonsense, in my opinion. The children are paying for their campaigning."
