(Computer Asso) CA Said to Be Planning 1,000 Layoffs (could be up to 1500)
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1647378,00.asp

Computer Associates International Inc. is planning to lay off at least 1,000 employees as it ramps up its offshore development, according to sources close to the Islandia, N.Y. company.

The layoffs, which could represent as much as a 10 percent reduction of its 15,000 employee payroll, are expected to come in the first week of October, sources said.

At the same time, CA is planning to add 400 to 600 positions at its development center in Hyderabad, India, a company representative said. (emphasis mine)

The moves come as part of CA's move to reduce costs, which the company indicated in its first-quarter earnings report. "We are taking a hard look at our expense structure and looking for ways to be more efficient and cost- effective," the CA representative said.

"Layoffs wouldn't be a surprise. But if it's 1,000—that's big," said Ray Paquet, an analyst with Gartner Inc. in Lowell, Mass. "A lot of people are picking up their hiring in India. Why should be any different?" he added.

1. nothing new for CA ...

They're in the business of gobbling up companies and bankrolling their revenues for the next several years. Than they fire as many employees as they can.

CA is a nightmare company.

4. Amen to that....
I worked for one of those companies they gobbled up. Vicious bastards. Lots of stories about them. What was astonishing was the way they would gladly screw any customer, break any rule to get cash. And they need cash to fuel the acquisitions. One customer they royally screwed was the U.S. Army, and they got away with it. Later found out that they also did it to the AF. All my people quit within 4 months of CA buying the company. They just HATED to come to work every day. I finally up-and-left, and I had to sue them to get final comp. Only when I had absolute proof of the fraud did they finally give up. I hated them so much I spent time every week for over a year with my former customers telling them where to "watch out!"

10. Ruthless, heartless - pure jackboot capitalism
I worked for CA for about 6 months and totally agree with you.
I was recruited for a particular job but, by the time I actually joined,
things had changed and I was put into a different one. I didn't mind
that too much (still sounded interesting) but it didn't take long for
the underlying nature to become apparent.

I joined on a Tuesday, was informed that I was flying to Pittsburgh
that Sunday so they organised a new passport and a US visa in less than
two days ... can you say "connections"?
My colleague and I were introduced to the existing support team in
Pittsburgh with a friendly comment from the US Area Manager:
"Hi everyone, this is ____ and _____ from England. They're the ones
who will be replacing you." <Cue sound of two jaws hitting the floor.>

The final kick from CA came several months after I'd left when my new
employer's accountant gently informed me that CA hadn't been deducting
the correct amount of tax & NI ... leaving me with ~£1000 to make up
from that tax year.

7. I bet you're right on that and I also think the anemic
hiring over the last year will slow down even more.

8. These are the folks with the interrogation commercial
You know the one, the one with the psycho woman with the big teeth asking a youngish male employee "where were you next Thursday evening?" as some demented flashlight-wielding Igor torments her subject; it's one of he most perplexing commercials ever. Do you want to buy the services of people who gleefully point out that they torment people for their intent?

We've become a very mean people, but not quite THAT mean.
