U.S. due to target rebel strongholds

<snip>

In the face of increasing insurgent violence, military officers and analysts said Friday that U.S. forces in Iraq (news - web sites) will soon mount military operations to retake important cities and areas they have ceded to the rebels, at the risk of a large number of casualties to U.S. forces and Iraqi civilians.

The surge in violence in Iraq over the past month has demonstrated both the growing ability of the anti-American insurgency to attack civilian and military targets and the increasingly limited options available to U.S. forces.

"If we're going to have a safe and secure Iraq, we have to not allow any sanctuary for the terrorists, for the former regime loyalists or for any of the foreign terrorists that are in country," said Gen. Richard Cody, Army vice chief of staff. "They can't have any safe havens."

Cody said the U.S. forces in Iraq would work "in concert with coalition forces" to remove those havens.

4. Bombing of Laos and Cambodia, coming up.
I haven't heard the "no safe havens" shit in decades.
Can't win on the ground? No problemo, bomb some random shit
and you can look invincible again for a while.
Where is Kissinger anyway?

Edited on Sat Sep-18-04 08:36 AM by leftchick
I can't believe more people are not grasping the Viet Nam parallels. For cripes sakes I was just a little kid in 1968 and I think of the similarities daily. Same jargon, same bombs, same dead soldiers, same dead innocent brown people... :(

7. BS! This article implies the had a "plan for the peace" and that it
just didn't work out according to plan. Funny, this is just after Kerry/Edwards hit them on NOT having a "plan for the peace". There was NO stinkin' plan! They first FIRED the Iraqi military. They have been flying by the seat of their pants since the Chimpster called "Mission Accomplished".

snip>

U.S. generals and administration officials have warned that the deadly attacks in Iraq will increase as elections planned for January draw closer. But the car bombings, roadside bombs, kidnappings and executions, and mortar and sniper assaults that killed scores of Iraqis and U.S. troops in recent weeks have exposed the risky side of the Bush administration's strategy.

That plan calls for increased reliance on U.S.-trained Iraqi military and police forces. In the interim, however, U.S. troops since last spring essentially have ceded control of all or parts of key Sunni Muslim Iraqi cities, including Fallujah, Ramadi and Samarra.

Cities once under U.S. control

A year ago, all were controlled, though only tenuously, by U.S. troops. Other cities where security once was considered passable have become battlegrounds.
