Granny D takes aim at Sen. Gregg

DURHAM - Doris "Granny D" Haddock promised nothing short of "the renewal of our American Revolution" on Friday when she brought her grassroots run for U.S. Senate to the University of New Hampshire.

Haddock, a 94-year-old Democrat who became a cultural icon in 1999 when she walked across the country to support campaign-finance reform, will face Republican incumbent Judd Gregg in the Nov. 2 election.

She can’t wait.

"I love the smell of landslides in the morning," she said, invoking the famous line from the movie "Apocalypse Now," and anticipating a campaign win.

6. Is this a joke???
A New England battleground state during a presidential election where our candidate is from New England, and our senate candidate is 94 years old????

WTF!!!! These are not the times for cute or quaint candidacies. One senate seat could swing the whole senate this year! We should be seriously contesting every seat! Especially in battleground states where we could throw some organization and national support behind the candidate, including appearances and rallies.

Unbelievable.

7. No Joke
Granny D stepped in at the 11th hour, when the previous candidate (Burt Cohen) had to drop out as his campaign finance mananger embezzled his funds. She may have a better chance than Cohen did.

Other than her age, she's a fabulous candidate. She's outspoken, progressive, well-known and loved and has been an activist for years. She has tremendous support within NH.

Google her, and check out her website at www.grannyd.org. She's nothing to sneer at--remember, old ain't dead.

8. No, old ain't dead.
But 94 years old practically is. Even if she were a serious candidate and won, it would just be a seat that the Republican governor would be filling before you know it.

Nothing against the elderly, but asking a 94 year old to be your US Senator isn't realistic.

24. You mean the guy
who was already an incumbent for 50 some odd years by the time he ran for senate at 94?

And I'm sure every single person here said "What the hell are the people of NC doing electing someone who's 94?"

20. No Repug Governor
next year. We'll have John Lynch in that seat. He's already neck and neck with Benson, and Lynch is not only a good guy (with a lot better morals than Benson) but he's also got the money he'll need for the race. And, he's one of the Dean Dozens.

25. C'mon, you don't have a lower age limit than 94?
What if she were 84, would you have objected?

Americans are living longer, and if she can handle the heat, then I am with her all of the way.

28. Nope.
I'm not a bigoted against the elderly. But I think it's silly to pit a 94 year old challenger against a Senate incumbent. Especially when it is as vital to retake the senate as it is.

9. Yes to both points
Yes, someone will stand up tall to take the place of:

party leaders who can't do their jobs

journalists who won't do theirs

a government that is no longer a government

a law that is never used to protect the people.

Those amateur nutcases are us, in case you haven't looked into the mirror. The vacuum is a responsibility to be filled by the just not gamed by the "experts" who have failed and betrayed their training and obligations. Yes it is a scandal that better people than me or we don't simply do their jobs with similar courage, application of brain, moral sense and common wisdom. Yes it is a derisive sign when the common man can do better.

God knows the bug exterminators and crooks of this world are willing to fill that vacuum.

10. Not sure I understand your post
Might be me.

I hope no one thinks I'm criticizing GrannyD (is that her rap name??). My criticism is directed at state and national party leaders. When so much attention was lavished on this state early this year, and all the operatives and money was flowing into NH, how could they not cultivate a proper candidate for Senate? It's unbelievable.

They have conceded the seat.

14. Granny has earned her shot at a seat, the old fashioned way
If i was still a Granite Stater, I would vote for her in an instant. She is tough, shrewd, smart, determined, and no-bullshit. She tells the truth, straight-up. That's the best of the New England Yankee tradition.

Granny doesn't "lean" one way or the other. She stands up straight and tall, with a soul like a granite mountain.

it's stupid for us to be righter, smarter or more active than the supposed pros. I don't feel exactly overwhelmed by ego and self importance for that grim fact.

18. If a dead guy can beat John Ashcroft in a Senate race,
Granny D can beat Judd Gregg straight up, at age 94.

I had the pleasure of speaking with her two years ago. She is a remarkable person, and sharp as a tack.

Those who underestimate this woman due to her age do not know her story.

Just five years ago, she walked from California to Washington DC in support of campaign finance reform. I'd like to see her young detractors duplicate that feat.

She was arrested in the Capitol rotunda for reading aloud from the Constitution.
