Bush Seen Vulnerable to Kerry Among Independent Voters
Bush Seen Vulnerable to Kerry Among Independent Voters

By David Morgan
KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine (Reuters) - President Bush, who holds a sizable lead in some polls, still appears to be vulnerable to Democrat John Kerry among independent voters whose shifting loyalties could determine the winner of the November election, pollsters say.

Polling results from the Pew Research Center, the Christian Science Monitor and the Gallup Organization suggest independent voters are favoring Kerry as concerns about the economy and Iraq re-emerge as top campaign issues, despite a surge of support for Bush following the Republican convention.

"At this point, it seems that Kerry's doing slightly better than Bush among independents," said Jeff Jones, managing editor of the Gallup Poll.

A new Gallup survey released on Friday showed the Democratic presidential nominee leading Bush 50-43 percent among independents, even though the Republican incumbent held a 13-percentage-point lead among voters overall.

A Monitor/TIPP survey, one of several that showed the national presidential race returning to a dead heat, suggested a 10-point Kerry lead among independents.

1. The thing that concerns me most about the polls is the fear
that some may not vote because they might think they are wasting their time (after all, it's going to be a Bush landslide so why bother?).

And, as I and others have pointed out, the polls conducted don't include cell phone users with no land line which is probably a chunk of the younger voters.

In speaking with young people, I have found they are extremely concerned about the return of conscription and are motivated to vote for this reason alone. I think young people will vote in record numbers on November 2. Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part, but I don't think so.

Also, remember, as a group, we are probably all "news junkies" and are paying attention to the polls. Other people aren't that obsessed with these numbers. Think back to before the bug bit you. Could you quote Gallup Polls and Zogby polls? Heck, I thought Zogby only rated restaurants.

Therefore: Don't be discouraged, keep the faith and ask everyone you know if they are registered to vote (have a form handy in case they aren't). :)

2. It might also work for us
I am feeling optimistic today, because it has occurred to me that if it looks like * could win in a landslide, those people who have a cringy feeling about him but can not bear the thought of voting for a dem might feel it is safe to stay home on election day. They could assume that * won't need their vote. And when all the s**t comes down (and it will) they can honestly say, "I didn't vote for *"

3. "Independents",....THINK!!!! Busholinis worst nightmare!!!
Short of martial law and "Diebold",...Kerry will be a landfall that will shock the right-wing back into their crevices,...

But, I am in this "right-wing, roach-control" business,...for the long-haul. The great thing about the likes of me is,...while I am a pesticide against human rodents who consume off of fellow humans,...I don't impose any toxins from which I profit.

IMAGINE THAT!!!
