GOP Mailing Warns Liberals Will Ban Bibles
http://tinyurl.com/486ao

WASHINGTON (AP) - Campaign mail with a return address of the Republican National Committee warns West Virginia voters that the Bible will be prohibited and men will marry men if liberals win in November.

The literature shows a Bible with the word ``BANNED'' across it and a photo of a man, on his knees, placing a ring on the hand of another man with the word ``ALLOWED.'' The mailing tells West Virginians to ``vote Republican to protect our families'' and defeat the ``liberal agenda.''

Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie said Friday that he wasn't aware of the mailing, but said it could be the work of the RNC. ``It wouldn't surprise me if we were mailing voters on the issue of same-sex marriage,'' Gillespie said.

Jim Jordan, a spokesman for America Coming Together, described the mailing as ``standard-issue Republican hate-mongering.''

1. If if weren't stupid...it would be funny
Edited on Sun Sep-19-04 07:02 AM by Free2BMe
Just read this article in our local news...How stupid, how sad, how dumb...Right off the top..they are idiots if they think they are carrying out the Christian message..We would not be warring in Iraq and other areas of our world would be getting a whole lot more support...Plus, our own countrypeople would not be living under bridges, going undereducated, unfed, uncaredfor....if they truly thought they were bible believers... Most of the prophets were/ are RADICALS...as was Christ....

5. Right wingers ignore Jesus' message
Edited on Sun Sep-19-04 07:12 AM by shockingelk
Begging the obvious, I put together a case for government welfare according to Jesus as reported in the Gospel of Matthew ...

Plus, here's a kicker - the first to live Jesus' message lived communally ...
All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all. There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need.
Acts 4:32-35, http://www.biblegateway.com/cgi-bin/bible?passage=ACTS+4

Point this stuff out to right wingers and they go bonkers ...

Not only does taking the Bible literally cause you to miss the fact that Jesus' message was a way of thinking, not what to think, but many also pick and chose what to take literally and what to twist and maim.

13. Well ...
I'm not sure what you're thinking of, but Jesus changed the scene quite a bit. The message was that if you love God and your neighbor as yourself, you'll already be following all of the commandments, plus a lot more.

When he explained why breaking the commandment about keeping the sabbath holy was the right thing to do is the best example.

The message is really simple and you can get it in about an our if you start reading at Matthew 5.

It also helps to remember the gospels were written decades after Jesus' death and are all second hand at best. But the simplicity of his observations is retained: you don't need commands from an external God to act morally: you have a conscience and ability to reason of your own.

12. It's sad, too.
Because so many of them will slurp this right up and believe it. We've got so many undeducated people running around who vow to vote for Bush because he's such a great Christian.

Anyway, welcome to DU! Nice to have you with us.

7. In their twisted logic, people will believe this stuff
It provides more fodder for hating liberals. Sadly, people just take it and run with it instead of thinking about the truth. Liberals are the ones banning/burning/censoring books, movies, TV, etc. Liberals aren't the one's trying to stifle free speech.
