Get pregnant, or get sent to Iraq?
Edited on Sun Sep-19-04 09:51 AM by DoYouEverWonder
September 19, 2004

GULFPORT - Cristie Oliver sat down heavily at the kitchen table as she read the Western Union mailgram.

"Oh, no," she said, the color draining from her face.

<snip>

The mailgram was from the Army; Cristie was being called back to active duty. The Army wanted as many as 545 days, starting Sept. 5.

<snip>

Toro silenced the group, announced that Cristie had been called to Iraq and asked the members to pray for her. They held hands and bowed their heads. They converged on Cristie, hugging and kissing her. One woman told Cristie that she had a son in the Navy, and she offered advice:

"You should get pregnant."

4. That is the saddest story
I would be just that desperate if someone told me I had to leave my kids and go to war. The worst part is, in about a year, they'll be taking her anyway, and she'll be leaving a three year-old and a four month-old infant.

5. This reminds me of draft days of 'Nam. If you got married, it
changed your draft status! Big problem I have with it is that there were quite a few weddings in the 60's that were done for the wrong reasons, and the same thing will happen with shildren now! There is a BIG difference though. Although divorce is still rough, a marriage can be thrown away. You can't do that with kids!!!

6. That's definitely the downside to this idea
As for myself, I think I would rather pretend I was gay.

9. I don't think that's an excuse anymore. It also was in the 60's.
As far as I know, the gay excuse doesn't keep you out anymore.

15. What about Don't Ask, Don't Tell?
I would go down to the recruiting office and put on one hell of a show. I don't think they'd want to enlist me after that?

18. Better idea...
Do miserably on the eye exams, Fail the physical tests (come in with, say a couple shots of nyquil on you), may not want to play with the psych exams... they might send you off to the funny farm if you fail them TOO badly.

Try to hit on the mail examiners (if your male, women do visa versa).

Damn! I was so sure that Dickless Cheney got married back then for love...
he seemed like such a romantic. :puke:

7. Just Like Cheney
This is my commentary on this story on my web site:
www.Earthside.com

"This is Bush's "compassionate conservatism"? This is Bush's incompetence as 'commander-in-chief' ... it is weakening the military strength of this country for his personal political benefit. If we need a draft, he should be honest enough to say so - but, of course, Bush hasn't been honest about the Iraq attack from the beginning. (Incidentally, there is nothing wrong with this tactic to avoid military service. Lynne Cheney's very timely pregnancy is how "Chickenhawk" Dick received his fifth deferment during Vietnam.)

10. Didn't Cheney Have His First Kid...
exactly 9 months after they day that they found out just being married wouldn't be a deferment any more?

Still this is both a joyous and sad story. Still, I always worry about children coming into the world for reasons other than love.

THough it does seem like they're happy...struggling to survive, but happy.
