CBS Talks With Suspected Source of Documents
Network to Air Interview in Effort to Resolve Dispute Over Bush Guard Memos' Authenticity

By Howard Kurtz
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, September 20, 2004; Page A14

CBS News anchor Dan Rather has interviewed the retired lieutenant colonel widely believed to have helped provide "60 Minutes" with the disputed National Guard documents about President Bush that have created a credibility crisis for the network, and CBS plans to air the interview in the coming days.

The on-camera sit-down with Bill Burkett, who has urged Democratic activists to wage "war" against Republican "dirty tricks," could help resolve whether CBS continues to stand by its story or concedes the purported 30-year-old memos are forgeries, as numerous document experts have contended.

1. Why is it that the BBC, the Mirror and CBS have to "back down"...
yet Bush, Blair and Howard keep THEIR jobs? Surely one mea culpa deserves another...

3. Well, I can't hardly wait to see what sort of defense Rather presents
Dan Rather better address all the questions about the documents and not give rise to new questions, or else this could very well be Rather's swan song.

8. I won't be sorry to see old Dan bite the dust on this one.
Some kind of device got inserted into his brain around the time of the "What's the frequency, Kenneth?" incident, and Dan has never been the same since.

12. You do realize that there is the probability that all memos are forgeries
If the CBS memos are forgeries, but if they look like similar documents that the White House has released before, then one can only speculate that it is possible, and probably, that all the memos about Bush's record are forgeries. If that is the case, where are the real Bush records?

13. Rather is finished
Expect a quiet retirement press release after a "decent interval."

15. Why?
Why would he retire over this? I'd think that since his detractors are saying that he will retire over this, that he'd want to "show them" by doing the exact opposite. Then again, he is in his 70's, isn't he?

6. Whether the documents are disputed or not, it has brought front and
center the question of Shrub's TANG service. The whores do not understand that this is keeping it alive.

16. I wish that I could agree with you on this...
...but that seems to be exactly what this whole controversy is NOT doing. I've seen more talk about the credibility of CBS and Dan Rather than about Bush's TANG record since the 60 Minute story first came out.

7. FAUX caught Rather getting off a plane in Dallas
He was on his way to interview Burkett.

By the way, Burkett made the rounds last February. Paul Zahn and Chris Mathews interviewed him then.

Burkett was an eyewitness to Bu$h's military records being purged. He saw about 20 or so documents that had been tossed in the garbage. I think ol' Dan might have a few more documents and tricks up his sleeve, before it's over.

9. Dan Rather is a Texan and he frequently lies home
Howie Kurtz is a media Bush whore and I am sure he would be the last to know if Dan was interviewing anybody.

I think Dan and CBS have a plan and they sure are keeping it tight and under control. Dan isn't a cub reporter and he had dealt with the Bush's before.

14. I Agree
Dan Rather is an exceptional pro, knowing that his advisor's thought the documents were phonies, he would have to have some kind of divergent plan for running them, this story isn't over and I for one would not count Dan out yet. He understands politics better than Karl Rove could ever have hoped, there is something brewing....

Prepare for the Swan Song.
