BAGHDAD, Iraq - Insurgents fired on a U.S. patrol with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades Monday, killing one American soldier, the U.S. military said.

The soldier, who was serving with the Army's 1st Infantry Division, was killed near Ash Sharqat, 168 miles north of Baghdad, a military statement said.

The name of the soldier was withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

Over 1,000 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq (news - web sites) in March 2003.

3. Now the media's meme will be.....
"over a thousand dead" - never taking the time to give us the exact numbers. Why not say this, "it was just yesterday that we hit the 1,000 mark and already we're at 1033." No, they won't get too specific because the sheep in this country are not much better than bug-eyed Barbara Bush who told us not to worry our beautiful minds over war dead.
