Halliburton is accused of failing to cooperate with government efforts -- "among other infractions" -- to have the radioactive materials returned to Nigeria, a statement by President Olusegun Obasanjo's office said. Officials refused to say if the other reasons include local bribery scandals that have prompted investigations of Halliburton in Nigeria, France and the United States.
. . .
The alleged mishandling became public in February 2003, when Nigerian authorities broadcast warnings that radioactive material being used by the oil industry in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta had gone missing. Radioactive material is used in equipment measuring depth for oil wells, among other uses in the oil industry.
Authorities later said the materials belonged to Halliburton. A Nigerian firm had sold the radioactive material as scrap, and it was found in Germany, Justice Minister Akinlolu Olujimi said in June.
Olujimi said at the time that Halliburton had shipped the recovered material from Germany to the United States, as Nigeria was trying to have it returned here.
