Kerry: Bush Wanted Debate 'Life Lines'
Kerry: Bush Wanted Debate 'Life Lines'

Associated Press

NEW YORK - Why did it take so long for the Bush and Kerry campaigns to agree on a debate schedule? Sen. John Kerry had the answer for television's Regis Philbin, who has hosted the quiz show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?"

"The big hang-up was George Bush wanted to get life lines, you know, so he could call somebody," the Democratic candidate for president quipped Tuesday while appearing on "Live With Regis and Kelly."

10. he made the rounds during the 2000 campaign.
maybe he's afraid to this time. nothing like a studio audience booing you to make you look like you're sinking.

7. He is probably having a radio receiver surgically implanted in his skull
Just insert it in the bone behind the ear and its vibrations will be picked up by his ear.

there's room for Granny's old Philco Cathedral radio in there.

Kerry looks good, but sounds a little hung-over. Kelly's voice hurts my soul.

23. Sorry...
...I meant "hung-over" from Letterman last night, not from a drinking binge (like me). His voice was totally shot and he seemed a bit groggy. The audience didn't seem to care...they loved him! I think it's fantastic he's getting so much free-air time. It almost makes up for CBN (700 Club, etc.) and FOX.

18. Very bad strategy.
We need to stop lowering expectations of Bush. Lowering expectations of Bush means that all he has to do is show up to the debate, drool, and the Murkans will give it to him.

19. why, george w. bush would never show up at the debates and drool.
he's probably the best debator on the political scene right now. with his mastery of the facts and polished elocution, john kerry will be lucky to escape with only his ears and nose bleeding.

though i'm a kerry supporter, these debates scare the crap out of me. this will be bush's moment to shine like the sun. kerry was foolish to agree to three of them.

at least that's what i've said in all the letters i've written today to news outlets.

21. Kerry had better understand that Bush will not debate.
Bush does not debate. He answers questions by rattling off heavily vetted talking points. When Bush goes off-message, he is a horror show, but he will probably play it safe at the debates.

The worst part is that presidential debates are not won or lost on the strength of arguments, but rather on who gets a clever jab in or on who is caught looking uncomforable. Reagan vs. Mondale... Bentsen vs. Quayle... Kennedy vs. Nixon... Cheney vs. Lieberman... Bush vs. Gore... All won or lost on the dumbest grounds.

22. the rethuglican play book is so simple that any of us could write it all
out on a paper napkin at this point. Kerry will wallop boosh in the debates, boosh will falter and stumble and his verneer will crack and peel, and the press will hem and haw and say it was a tie.

25. Kerry will have trouble beating Bush in a TV debate.
I guess that is why he is attacking Bush on this.

Bush has never lost a debate- and Kerry will be a winner for even being brave enought to show up.

27. I respect that position
a little, but something inside tells me to yell bullshit.

Bush can not debate issues. He is incompetent at that. He may have never lost, but those posed against him could have been worse off than what he is. Besides, I do not think kerry has ever lost a run for office or a debate.

28. Kerry cannot match Bush's folksy mannerisms...
Bush's back-woods witticisms play well to media commentary.

The media said Bush beat Gore in the 2000 debates-so now we can expect Bush to be REALLY good after 4 additional years of "on the job training."

the dumbness is in question still. And about his on the job training....do you mean the vacations he is constantly on every other week at crawford or camp david?

31. People love even pretend cowboys.
Even if his accent & ranch are fake, it seems to play well to media commentary and American archetype imagery.

Bush is totally expected to win these debates, since he has never been said to have lost one.

Can Kerry break Bush's streak of victories? He has 3 chances!!

38. Bush will have a nervous breakdown
By sheltering himself from all dissent he is really setting himself up for failure during the debates. He is out of practice, and will come across as disturbed, unprepared, impatient, and all around idiotic.
