Decorated Soldier Reportedly Attacked At Concert (Toby Keith)
http://www.nbc4i.com/news/3746350/detail.html

A local soldier back from the war in Iraq said he was beaten at an area concert because of what was printed on his T-shirt, NBC 4's Nancy Burton reported.

Barton, 19, of Grove City, received a Purple Heart for his military service in Iraq. He almost lost his leg last month after a Humvee he was riding in ran over a landmine.

Barton said he was injured again Friday night in a crowded parking lot as he was leaving the Toby Keith concert at Germain Amphitheatre. The solider was injured so badly that he can't go back to Iraq as scheduled.

"I don't remember getting hit at all, really," said Barton, a member of the 1st Calvary Division. "He hit me in the back of the head. I fell and hit the ground. I was knocked unconscious and he continued to punch and kick me on the ground."

Barton and his family said he was beat up because he was wearing an Iraqi freedom T-shirt.

This story sure doesn't smell right. At a Toby Keith concert? And no one came to his aid? Maybe it happened but it sounds like a setup.

He can't tell Iraq apart from Iran. Good thing for him it's not his ass on the line.

... but I love the term, and Parlocky.

I can't help but wonder if the assailant misunderstood the guy's t-shirt, thinking he was pro-terraist or something.

At any rate, I never pass up a chance to type:

46. That's where it smells.
I'm sure the GOP will come up with something like "A band of liberal insurgents infiltrated this blessed concert full of patriotism and family values in order to try and take away our freedoms, but all they could do was beat up some soldier to the point where he couldn't fight for his country anymore."

7. A very incomplete report
Six of the guys' friends say he was jumped from behind; one of the other guys' friends say that Barton was the aggressor. The cops say that the word of six friends on one side outweighs the word of one friend on the other side. No identification whatsoever of the alleged assailant, but it turns out that the "local soldier" won't be going back to Iraq thanks to his injuries.

{Sniff, sniff} Something smells here.

53. gratuitous, read the article again.
"According to a Columbus police report, six witnesses who didn't know Barton said the person who beat him up was screaming profanities and making crude remarks about U.S. soldiers, Burton reported."

It wasn't six of Barton's friends, it was 6 people who he didn't know but who witnessed the attack.

12. This Story Kind of Stinks
According to the story there were 6 witnesses who watched the fight and didn't help the guy, and I'll bet that no one knows what really started the altercation.

For all they know this soldier could have said something to provoke his attacker.

And don't you just love the little snide remark his mother made, about the insurgents being cowards, like her sons attacker. But being the good "christian" lady she is, she say a prayer for him. I wonder if shes praying for the children of Fallujah?

I see that this troop is in the 1st Cavalry Division, wasn't that the unit reported on by Reuters, something about abusing Iraqi civilians?

Maybe there is a reason why Mr. Barton doesn't want to go back to Iraq right now.

I can't the slime that did this, but I also choose to focus on the fact that this soldier is wanting to get back to his unit, back to the war.

That's the type of person the left simply will never understand, in that they have no honor and he personifies it.

Hell, would you want to go back to Iraq? The fact that he is trying to promote the noxious right wing 'freedom' bullshit counts against him, of course, and makes the story unbelievable--he should have left that part out. I suppose getting someone to hit you so hard you are unable to return to active duty beats shooting yourself in the foot.

55. Toby Keith
Edited on Wed Sep-22-04 07:16 AM by trapper914
I'm not complete;y certain of Toby's politics. Sure, he's jingoistic ("Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue") and he's incredibly supportive of the soldiers ("American Soldier"), but I've never heard him say anything overly supportive of the Republicans. I've heard him interviewed once or twice, and he was somewhat evasive.

If memory serves, the Toby/Dixie Chicks feud started when the Chick went after him for the lyrics to "Courtesy..." If so, I don't blame him for firing back. Like the Chicks, Toby writes much, if not all, of his own music, so I'm sure he might take that personally. And like the Chicks, Toby is not all about the PC soundbites, so he would certainly speak his mind if he felt insulted.

As for the soldier who took the ass whoopin', I agree with the others here. It seems like the "anti-soldier" antagonist would get his ass handed to him at a Toby Keith concert. I won't say the soldier did it to get out of going back, but this plays very well into the current right wing agenda: painting the left as anti-military and anti-American...the exact words Rush Limbaugh used on his show yesterday. They just don't seem to understand that we care more about the soldiers than they do and refuse to sit idly by while they're sent to die in a politically manufactured war.
