JACKSONVILLE, United States (AFP) - Democratic presidential challenger John Kerry (news - web sites) chose Florida to hold his first press conference in more than six weeks.
Not only was it timing, to challenge President George W. Bush (news - web sites) after his speech to world leaders at the UN General Assembly, but also the importance of the state going into the November 2 election.
The legal battle which decided the 2000 election between Bush and the Democrats' Al Gore (news - web sites) still haunts both parties. Bush won the state by 537 very controversial votes.
Kerry started a major in Florida, where he held one rally and answered reporters' questions in Jackson before heading for Orlando to hold a rare rally with his vice presidential running mate John Edwards (news - web sites).
