Angus King (former Maine Independent Gov) endorses Kerry
Edited on Tue Sep-21-04 05:47 PM by MaineDem
PORTLAND — Former Maine Gov. Angus King on Tuesday endorsed Democrat John Kerry for president, blaming Republican President George W. Bush for what King described as partisan policies that have divided the nation.

"Rather than uniting the country, George Bush has pursued a narrowly partisan and ideological agenda that has divided our nation as never before," King told reporters at a news conference arranged by the Kerry campaign.

King is a former Democrat who ran for governor as an independent and served two terms. He said he remains an independent.

He also said he voted for Bush in 2000.

10. This is good news!
Angus King served two terms as Maine Governor. He virtually bankrolled his own campaign. Politically he was a centrist. He was an awesome speaker. Both terms he ran as an independent. Some of his highest praise came from Minn. governor Jesse Ventura. You can take whatever you want from that. When he left office Maine was in pretty good shape. We are still working through some problems but they aren't to daunting. He handed over the governorship to dem John Baldacci. He left office with high marks. After he left office he packed up a Winnebago and took his family on cross-country adventure that lasted for months, letting his beard grow all along.

King made an astute observation regarding politics today. He made note of a 'growing sense of entitlement' in both political parties and in the electorate. He summed this observation up as 'give me paved roads, public infrastructure, police and fire protection, good public schools etc, etc... but don't tax me'.

4. Well, that settles it.
A few recent weird polls had been showing Maine in the purple state category. If this guy carries weight in the state, I'm no longer worried at all about Maine's 4 electoral votes.

6. You never had to worry anyway.
Polls or no polls, Maine is a blue state. The only reason the repubs have been hoping for Maine is because of changes in our registration laws. It's now possible for people here to register as undecided or undeclared, or some such thing. Many people are choosing to register this way, rather than to register with either party. But the people of Maine have not changed, they're blue through and through.

13. King was consistently anti-union...
...anti-minimum wage increase, anti-single payer, and anti-environmental in his positions.

His 'independent' career was driven by a fit of pique, seeing Joe Brennan ahead of him in the Democratic queue, and Snowe and others with a lock on the GOP, he basically created his own party because the line would be shorter.

I have never met a man more impressed with himself than Angus King.
