Hispanics slam Bush

Prominent politicos take part in bus tour starting in Arizona

By Jim Tankersley, Rocky Mountain News
September 21, 2004

PUEBLO - The schoolyard was warming, the mariachis were fidgeting and a balding man in a mustache was calling out the president of the United States.

Cruz Bustamante, California's lieutenant governor, had just ripped George W. Bush for giving tax cuts to rich people and waging war in Iraq "like some kind of family feud."

>snip

A few minutes later, the event's main attraction added the rest. If Hispanics turn out in force come November, Dolores Huerta told more than 1,000 children and parents outside a Pueblo charter school named in her honor, they can sweep John Kerry into the White House.

"It's not enough for us just to say, I'm gonna go vote," said Huerta, who co-founded the United Farmworkers of America. Then she invoked the other founder: "We all have to become organizers. We all have to think like Cesar Chavez."

Janet has been very vocal and active here in Arizona where we need her. Teresa arrives tomorrow and is expected to speak to a crowd of 8000 at Sun City West.

Don't write us off yet.

36. Hey, Justice...thanks for the update.
I am very interested in AZ and I appreciate the update. I have seen Janet on a few shows and I really like her.
Any visits by K/E planned?
I saw a bio on Teresa and it said she had visited migrant workers when she was married to Heinz. How wonderful for her to come back now.
Keep me posted, will you?

31. The term "Hispanic" is disliked by many
Edited on Wed Sep-22-04 10:36 AM by alarcoeg
because of the emphasis on Spanish (i.e. European) ancestry and the resulting downplaying of indigenous and/or African heritage.

I prefer to be called a "Latino" myself.

with the terminoligy. I will from now on always use Latino when speaking of Mexicans or Latin Americans in a broad context. It is good to know these things. Thank you

38. It's not that simple.
Some like to be called Mexicans, some Latino/as, some don't MIND Hispanic, but that one is falling out of favor. Chicano/a is coming back in style. You just have to ask, really. I'd rather just ask and get it right.

33. I'm not offended by the term Hispanic
It's just that it hides many cultural differences and implies that there is a single message that can appeal to all Hispanics. That is not the case, as you can see from some of the discussions on this thread. Cubans and Mexicans tend to lean in opposite political directions even though both are lumped together under the Hispanic rubric.

For example, immigration. Any restriction on immigration will have a disproportionate impact on the Mexican community. Cubans are covered under special laws and are granted residence automatically by simply stepping on US soil. Therefore, immigration restrictions are not likely to be a concern to Cuban Americans. Travel and commerce restrictions on the other hand tend to impact Cuban Americans because Cuba is the last remaining Socialist state in the Hemisphere.

Brazilians are not Hispanic at all, yet they tend to be lumped together as well. This is something that really drives them nuts.

The bottom line is this: In order to win the Hispanic vote, you need to relate to each subgroup of voters separately.

I hope this helped explain my earlier remark.

Edited on Wed Sep-22-04 04:59 AM by Xipe Totec
Effective Suffrage no re-election!

That was the battle cry of the Mexican Revolution of 1910 to get rid of another dictator.

Now why can't John Kerry use that slogan in Florida now?

Or rather, the most voter fraud.

Surely the message of free and fair elections would resonate with the Cuban community as well.

17. Cesar Chavez is one of my heroes
Win one for Cesar!

Here's a great new sign I saw recently on a restaurant. You take that
"Proud to be an American" sign and you do a little creative artistic
re-work (graffiti) and it now reads "Proud to be a mexican". With only 3 little character changes too.

¡Que viva La Raza! Espero que toda La Raza salgan para votar. Y vamos a mandar ese pendejo presidente, hijo del primer cabron bush, al infierno. Y su esposa también. ¡Fuera con ellos todo!

Sonia

19. Soy Chicano
Though I do put the 'Po' in pocho. I laughed at a kid (trust-funder son of one of the principles) in my office yesterday when he said that Bush might carry California because he could get 40% of Hispanics vote for him here like they did in Texas last go-round.

I told him not a chance, Chicanos and Latinos tend to serve in the military unlike people like you (he just laughed his I'm above-that-peasant-shit laugh), and they know who is sending them to get their asses shot off for nothing. We remember who pushed prop 187 and the rest of that shit.
