Kerry Finds Voice Pressing Bush on `War With No End'

Sept. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry is stepping up his criticism of President George W. Bush's handling of the war in Iraq, seeking to shift the election debate from who can protect the U.S. from terrorists to who can stop a conflict with ``no end in sight.''

Kerry, a four-term senator from Massachusetts, is peppering his daily comments with attacks about Bush living in a ``world of fantasy spin'' on Iraq, even when the subject is domestic policy. In Jacksonville, Florida yesterday, Kerry said the campaign ``entered a new phase'' and then spoke about the war before turning to his plan to provide health care for more Americans.

Bush has an edge in polls, leading with 46 percent support to 43 percent for Kerry in a Sept. 17-19 survey by Zogby International, because he changed the debate to terrorism, according to John Zogby, head of the Utica, New York-based polling firm. On the top five issues mentioned by voters, terrorism is the only one on which Bush outpolls Kerry.

``So long as Senator Kerry engages the president on the war on terrorism, the president wins,'' Zogby said. ...

1. So long as Senator Kerry engages the president on the war on terrorism
the president wins,'' Zogby said.

Bullshit! It was the unified attack on Bush's Iraq/WOT in the primaries, led by Clark, that hurt Bush's numbers the most.

2. Question on this statement from Shrub -
``A democratic Iraq has ruthless enemies, because terrorists know the stakes in that country,'' Bush said. ``They know that a free Iraq in the heart of the Middle East will be a decisive blow against their ambitions for that region.''

What are their (the terrorists) ambitions for the ME in Shrub's mind?

3. If Kerry STRONGLY takes on Bush on Iraq and

terrorism, Kerry will win! Frankly, I think a lot of this is a question of image...Kerry needs to come on strong and look like the fighter he is. He needs to back Bush into a corner in terms of continuuing the 'Fantasyland' attacks...it's not about crediblity now, it's about Bush's competence and grip on reality! Kerry has to make this PERSONAL (about Bush's flaws) but in an impersonal way.....in other words, highlighting his weakness and dependency on others, his poor judgment, etc.

In other words, Kerry has to make Bush look so out of touch with reality that if someone asks a voter "who do you want with a finger on the button" the answer is Kerry, not Bush.

Kerry has the gravitas and smarts--he now needs to kick Bush in the soft underbelly every day, non-stop with a bit of non-offending mockery thrown in. He's got to spur people to acknowledge their own unspoken uneasiness and doubts about Bush....

Exactly. Look, most people know * is an idiot controlled by scoundrels. If Kerry points this out subtly, people will be freed to acknowledge it. It's like one person first mentions the lousy smell everyone is trying to ignore in a room.
