Unease shadows Bush's optimism (LATimes)

Great theme: BushWorld versus RealWorld; Deception versus truth. Delusion and fantasy and spin versus reality.

WASHINGTON — A combination of escalating bloodshed, gloomy assessments and deteriorating security conditions in Iraq are challenging the Bush administration's upbeat view of the struggle to establish democracy in the beleaguered Middle East nation.

A growing sense of unease is visible among Republicans as well as Democrats in Congress as bombings and kidnappings continue to rise along with the death toll.

The new challenge to the administration's view of events comes at a crucial time for President Bush (news - web sites), as the interim Iraqi government struggles to prepare for elections in January and as the Iraq issue dominates his bid for reelection.

Campaigning Thursday in Minnesota and upstate New York, Bush acknowledged "ongoing acts of violence," but quickly returned to a central — and positive — message on Iraq: that U.S. policies are succeeding and Iraq is on the verge of democracy and free elections.

1. Cheney is stunned, poor thing.
From the article:
Amid the new disquiet over the administration's Iraq policy, Democratic presidential contender Sen. John F. Kerry (news, bio, voting record) charged during a campaign speech Thursday to the National Guard Assn. in Las Vegas that Bush was trying to hide the truth from the American people.

"Two days ago, the president stood right where I'm standing and did not even acknowledge that more than 1,000 men and women have lost their lives in Iraq," he said. "He did not tell you that with each passing day, we're seeing more chaos, more violence, more indiscriminate killings."

Kerry's remarks drew a sharp response from Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) a few hours later at a campaign rally in Reno, where Cheney said he was "stunned by the audacity of that statement."
(snip)

The committee's moderate Republican chairman, Sen. Richard Lugar (news, bio, voting record) of Indiana, expressed exasperation at the administration's rosy prewar assessments that as soon as Hussein was deposed, a euphoric Iraqi population would embrace democracy.

"The nonsense of that is apparent," he said. "The lack of planning is apparent."
(snip)
I'd think "democracy" as the Bush officials interpret it to others doesn't look all that "Democratic," after all.

6. As Inigo Montoya would say. . .
"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. "

2. Optimism or dilusional?
Diagnostic Criteria

1. Nonbizarre delusions (i.e., involving situations that occur in real life, such as being followed, poisoned, infected, loved at a distance, or deceived by spouse or lover, or having a disease) of at least 1 month's duration.
2. Criterion A for Schizophrenia has never been met. Note: Tactile and olfactory hallucinations may be present in Delusional Disorder if they are related to the delusional theme.

Criterion A of Schizophrenia requires two (or more) of the following, each present for a significant portion of time during a 1-month period (or less if successfully treated):
1. delusions
2. hallucinations
3. disorganized speech (e.g., frequent derailment or incoherence)
4. grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior
5. negative symptoms, i.e., affective flattening, alogia, or avolition

Note: Criteria A of Schizophrenia requires only one symptom if delusions are bizarre or hallucinations consist of a voice keeping up a running commentary on the person's behavior or thoughts, or two or more voices conversing with each other.
3. Apart from the impact of the delusion(s) or its ramifications, functioning is not markedly impaired and behavior is not obviously odd or bizarre.
4. If mood episodes have occurred concurrently with delusions, their total duration has been brief relative to the duration of the delusional periods.
5. The disturbance is not due to the direct physiological effects of a substance (e.g., a drug of abuse, a medication) or a general medical condition.

3. Bu$h paraphrased: "The good news is that Iraq is undergoing a
combination of escalating bloodshed, gloomy assessments, deteriorating security conditions, bombings, and kidnappings.

The bad news is that this means US policies are succeeding.

7. How IRONIC !!!!!!!
BUSH INVADED AND OCCUPIED IRAQ UNDER PRETENSE OF BRINGING DEMOCRACY TO THEM.

IRAQIS HAVE FELT BUSH'S HAND ON THEIR LAND AS IF IT WERE THE SAME IRON HAND, OR WORSE, THAT GOVERNED THEM FOR YEARS UNTOLD.

THEIR LAND HAS BECOME ONE BLOODY HELL WITH PEOPLE ON ALL SIDES DYING LIKE FLIES BEING SWATTED IN A HOT SWAMPY FLORIDA AFTERNOON, ALL THANKS TO THE HANDS OF BUSH.

THOSE SAME BUSH HANDS WHICH WORD BY WORD, STEP BY STEP, LIE BY LIE, STOLE OUR 2000 ELECTIONS, OUR CONSTITUTION, OUR FREEDOM OF SPEECH, OUR DEMOCRACY, AND WANTS TO RULE BY FEAR, DECEPTION, AND OBFUSCATION.

IT IS IRONIC THAT WHAT MIGHT F R E E US FROM THE HAND OF BUSH
MIGHT BE THE UNDENIABLE REALITY, BEGINNING TO BE NOTICED BY THE MEDIAWHORES, THAT BOMBS ARE EXPLODING IN IRAQ, THAT PEOPLE ARE BEING KILLED, THAT THE INSURGENTS ARE NOT JUST A HANDFUL OF MISFITS BUT AN ENTIRE PEOPLE OPPOSED TO THE BUSH HANDS ... those same hands that we oppose here in the U.S.,those same hands that are taking away our freedoms away, that are stealing the Iraqi oil and the Iraqi land. Those same hands which say that Bush understands the nature of killers, because, frankly, he is one. Those same hands which are snuffing oxygen away from the world !!!!!!!!

It is ironic that the people's voice in Iraq against the Bush Occupation of their land, expressed in the horrible violence and bloodshed that the mediawhores can no longer hide, as it is, will resound here in this country's November ballot boxes with the ousting of Bush, the bringing of the hope of democracy, through Kerry, here once again, and the hope of restoration, reparation, self-government and PEACE to the people of IRAQ.

KERRY YES. BUSH NO.
FREEDOM YES. DOMINION NO.

RESTORATION. REPARATION. SELF GOVERNMENT.

SOLIDARITY IN DEMOCRACY FOR EVER!

11. I agree. Goes right to the heart of issues
of policy, ideology, personality and character. And the examples are legion.
BushWorld, BushWorld, BushWorld. Say it often enough and it sounds lunatic, antic and ridiculous.
