U.S. Mint Unveils New Designs for Nickel
U.S. Mint Unveils New Designs for Nickel
Thursday September 16, 2004 4:01 PM
By JEANNINE AVERSA

Associated Press Writer

The Guardian SNIP:

WASHINGTON (AP) - There's change in store for Thomas Jefferson - on the nickel that is. He's getting his first makeover since being put on the coin in 1938.

The makers of the nation's coins, the U.S. Mint, unveiled designs for two new nickels to be issued in 2005. The rollout Thursday was the latest in a series of design changes for the coins.

A new likeness of Jefferson, the third president, will be on the front of the two revamped coins. The ``tails'' side also gets different looks.

With the makeover, Jefferson's image appears bolder. He gazes in a close-up profile from the side of the coin. The word ``liberty'' now appears in script - as Jefferson once had written in his own hand. The phrase ``In God We Trust'' remains on the front of the two coins as well as the year.

3. What happened to Reagan?
I thought he was going to be on all new coins of all denominations, and that "God" thing would be replaced by "Ron".

Guess I was listening to too many rightwingers lately.

He IS dead, right? I mean, that's not going to be the October surprise?

11. I still pick up every penny I see.
After about a year, I usually have around $100 worth.

People like you leave more pennies for the rest of us cheap bastards. ;)

I believe it is because nickel is cheaper than silver. At one time the value of a coin actually reflected the material they were made of....

(edited for clarity)

5. I wish the government would spend more time on trying

6. Republicans are good at graphic design, symbology, and marketing
We should definitely keep Republicans around to do the marketing for the US. They're brilliant at it. Of course in business the first thing you learn is not to let the marketing department make business decisions. Their job is to sell, not to lead. Disasters ensue (cf., the "New Coke") when you let the marketing guys call the shots.

My God, that's a fucking brilliant analogy. Good on me.

7. Yup. Good analogy. It's about "creating needs" rather than meeting them.
See?

12. It looks like shit
Why do they keep messing with our money? The new bills look much less dignified than the old too.

15. I agree...
the big reason they said they were going to change the bills is to stop counterfeiters.

I guess if there are enough counterfeiters out there then the value of our money would eventually drop because of it.

However I remember reading a news story when about how when the new bills came out people investors and whatnot in other countries actually lost faith in our money just because we were changing it. So that is one of the reasons our money is worth less.

16. I agree
The new reverses look alright; I don't mind the "limited time" different reverses like the different state quarters that the mints have been pointing out over the last three years.

The obverse on the other hand is a different story. The new picture of Jefferson just looks much worse than the old one, and it looks bad to have him coming in at an angle, off to the side, etc. But the mint already made the same mistake messing with the paper money; they looked much worse after they made them "safe" against counterfeiters. I'm not sure what the reason is for tampering with the nickel is, though.
