Iraq police toll: 1700 dead, 3,000 wounded
UPI - Thursday, September 16, 2004

BAGHDAD, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- The Iraqi interior ministry said Thursday an estimated 1700 people affiliated with its various departments and agencies have been killed since May 2003.

Ministry Director-General Gen. Samir al-Waili said the greatest number of the casualties was incurred by Iraqi police and internal security forces in operations aimed at ensuring security in Iraq.

Another 3,000 were also wounded, al-Waili said.

He said the ministry grants the families of victims 500,000 dinars in compensation and for the wounded and 150,000 dinars from the ministry's Fund for Martyrs killed in action and on duty.<snip>

1. Cannon fodder.
Just like the "ARVN" in southern Vietnam. And, by the way, what is .5 million dinars?--$20?

8. Add'em In. Wouldn't...
it be so much more accurate for the media to report the numbers in this fashion?

10. I Have Heard #'s
around 40,000+ for them but since "we don't do body-counts" there is no way to know, so I didn't include them. Add'em in though. The more accurate the better.

6. "It's just like California!"
or Detroit, or New York, or Nashville. Isn't that what the FAUX drones were arguing last year?

How sick is it that these poor guys were issued bb guns and sling shots and told to go out and defend their country while directing traffic?

.. to work for me. There's only one more sentence in the article, and it's vague garbage. The story is UPI, which is to say Moonie, so I guess it's not surprising the only other place it shows up is WTimes: http://washingtontimes.com/upi-breaking/20040916-082231-2421r.htm

I couldn't see any immediate reason to doubt the numbers, though (of course) they could be lowballing.
