NYT, pg1: Democrats Seek Louder Voice From Edwards
Democrats Seek Louder Voice From Edwards
By RANDAL C. ARCHIBOLD and ADAM NAGOURNEY

Published: September 16, 2004

....At a time when Vice President Dick Cheney has been mocking and pummeling Mr. Kerry across the country, reveling in the traditional fighting role of a vice-presidential nominee, Mr. Edwards has adopted a decidedly less belligerent and lower-profile stance as he campaigns through communities like this small town in southeast Ohio. Only in the last few days, with criticism percolating among Democrats, has he become louder in taking on the administration.

Mr. Kerry's advisers said Mr. Edwards was doing what they wanted, mixing attacks on President Bush and Mr. Cheney with the soft and smiling campaign style that became his hallmark during the Democratic primary battle - and which drew Mr. Kerry to him in the first place.

Mr. Edwards, in a brief interview in his bus by the side of the road near here on Wednesday, disputed the suggestion that he had kept a low profile or not energetically taken on Mr. Bush or Mr. Cheney....

***

But with Mr. Kerry under such piercing assault from Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney, some Democrats said they were concerned that Mr. Edwards seemed to be slipping to the side of the stage at the very time that Mr. Kerry needs him to do what Mr. Cheney is doing for Mr. Bush. Several drew comparisons with the soft-hitting vice-presidential campaign run by Senator Joseph I. Lieberman in 2000, and said they were concerned that Mr. Edwards, like Mr. Lieberman, would duck when it came down to the vice-presidential debate next month....

2. With Kerry under constant attack,
he could use a Veep who is aggressive, & counter attacks.

The article states that Edwards plans a future run for Prez, so does not want to be left with a negative image.

I wish we could fight back more effectively.

3. Wellllllll, I think the M E D I A should ALLOW our candidates some
G.damned AIR TIME so all of us can actually SEE Edwards and Kerry doing their thing across the country!!

Don't know about anyone else, but in my area I'm getting constant Bush ads and promos over my set. A couple second sound bites from Kerry/Edwards and thats it!

IMUS was bold enough to actually allow Kerry on his program yesterday and he acutally allowed KERRY some lengthy AIR TIME to talk.

So, whoever is putting this type of crap out needs to take it to CNN,MSNBC,FAUX,ABC,CBS,NBC etc etc...

BRING BACK THE "FAIRNESS" DOCTRINE!!

At least, in the opinion of those who have personally heard him speak,...they have opined that he has been awesome.

5. It's Adam Ngourney
as I wrote in another thread- this writer is a disgrace to the NY Times. His pieces always disparage Democrats, and it's gotten so transparent that the last several have had to credit co-writers (like this one does).

One would hope that the Times would either offer him a column on their editorial page- or simply fire the guy... but since they won't even fire Judith Miller after all of her dishonesty, I guess there's fat chance of that.

Meanwhile, don't listen to his slant. He's one of those people who will pretty much say anything, yet clothe it in words to make it seem acceptable to the public. That much, he's good at.
