GOP lawmaker calls for congressional investigation of CBS for Bush Guard service story
By David Bauder, Associated Press, 9/15/2004 12:43

NEW YORK (AP) A leading House Republican on Wednesday asked for a congressional investigation into disputed documents used by CBS News for a story examining President Bush's Vietnam-era service in the Texas Air National Guard.

Some document experts have questioned whether a memo believed to come from one of Bush's commanders at the time was fake. The memo from Lt. Col. Jerry B. Killian, used by CBS in its ''60 Minutes'' report last week, indicated Bush didn't follow orders to take a physical and that Killian was being pressured to sugarcoat his performance ratings.

''We continue to believe in this story,'' said Betsy West, CBS News' senior vice president.

Rep. Chris Cox, R-Calif., sought an investigation.

1. I sent an email to Rep. Chris Cox
I suggested he also call for a Congressional investigation into the use of forged documents to get approval for the invasion of Iraq.

40. If it's real, will force Bush to testify under oath.
If Bush wants to end this, he should just fess up, produce the documents that prove he completed his duty, took his physical, and was not AWOL

6. So sad that they have nothing better to do with their time....
...why aren't they calling for investigations into Fox News? One has to ask who benefits the most from this fiasco....George Bush does. While everyone is running around trying to figure out whether or not some documents are authentic - no one is hearing whats going on in Iraq, etc. If he can keep the country focused on this stuff - then his record as president isn't being discussed and scrutinized by the public.

the better. I read on a diary on Daily Kos that 10% of Bush supporters believe the documents are real. Now that is low number but is still is a significant percentage. If 10% of Bush supporters stay home - then Kerry will win.

I read today that Dan Rather will interview that 84 year old secretary of Bush TANG leader. She says the documents are fake but accurately reflect the situation. Bush had shirked his duty and Killian didn't know what to do about it. It will be interesting to see what Rather airs. IF Rove Co think they can take out an 84 year old Grandma, then we'll see.

I am beginning to think that "It's the Spin, Stupid". It doesn't matter what is real (after all the Swift Vets smears were false)- just that it is out there and talked about. Frankly, the undecideds - who have an dis-proportional effect on the national polls, are probably not real active in politics, they only respond to what people are talking about. This election will be decided on who gets people to the polls and what news stories/memes affect those people who faithfully vote but don't pay much attention to politics. Weird and sad.

Let him explain why he skipped the drug test, stopped flying after getting $1 million in training, left Texas to work for a political campaign, and never fulfilled his service pledge.

24. I'd LOVE to see him face a Congressional inquiry, alone.
For Chrissake he couldn't even face the 9-11 panel without Dick Cheney being there to hold his hand, and that was held in private.

Can you imagine his shifty eyes and sweating as he faces an adversarial type of panel? He'd probably blow up and spew off a string of obscenities.

23. My thoughts too. I just came on to DU to see what others
were saying about this "investigation" of CBS. I have C-Span on watching the House in open session.

The RETHUGS have been coming to the podium with their items and several of them have started a preamble rant about CBS!! It's OUTRAGEOUS!!

This is a totalitarian hijacking of our democracy, our freedoms of speech, and a DIRECT THREAT to Mr. Dan Rather, Citizen of the United States!!

There is also a move being made by another org....Democracy 21.org to kill the FEC as we know it and/or replace it with a stricter board. This group is pissed that 527's have had TOO MUCH leeway and money in advertising. ANOTHER NAZI TRICK.

My god, people, this is blatant fascism... :nuke:

in a time of war. I want an investigation into his donning a medal he didn't earn for photographs he has since disseminated to the public as false advertising of courage he does not possess. I want an investigation into the 1988 Bush campaign's false claims that Bush served in the U.S. Air Force.

26. will the Dems never learn...
....how to frame a story or control the news cycle? I'm getting disgusted by the refusal to USE news sources to our advantage.

Now come the Republicans with phase two of this story, designed to deny Kerry air time to get out his message.

Winning campaign strategy and tactics:

1. Define the opponent before he can define himself.

2. Keep him every day from getting his message out by stealing headlines and feeding stories to a lazy press.

That's how it works today.

while they are getting the headlines, John Kerry and John Edwards are being ignored. Dan Rather can fight his own battles as long as help on the way. If we let the Repugs put up another smoke screen no one will hear the issues and we will lose. We need to ignore these asses and continually talk about the issues INCLUDING THE ISSUE OF BUSHIES LYING AND COVERING UP HIS PAST. "NO HONEST MAN PURGES HIS RECORDS! LIAR! LIAR! LIAR!"

31. And Another Thing
Has anyone noticed how there have been no issues discussed yet.

I wonder if there will really be any debates.

If there are debates, they will all be monitored by Fox.

They are already trying to get the CBS eliminated as having anyone involved in the debates.

They take everything such as these memos and nothing has been discussed about Bush, only about the authenticity of the memos.

They took Kerry's military service & the only thing discussed was if he earned his medals.

And the media plays on.

Investigate how the press missed the National Guard issue in 1999 but talked incessantly about Gore's ties.

Investigate why television never pointed out the lies told for war.

Investigate how the current democratic candidate was hurt by the nitworks giving 2-3 weeks coverage of smearboat.

Investigate the bribery on the house floor, the withholding of information on the Medicare bill. Investigate the crime wave called Tom Delay.

Investigate why the press never mentions republican crime to the American people.

Investigate why corporations give our representatives money if they don't get anything back.
