Sharon doesn't plan to follow 'road map'

By KARIN LAUB
Associated Press Writer

JERUSALEM (AP) -- Israel will not follow the U.S.-backed "road map" peace plan and could remain in much of the West Bank for an extended period after it withdraws from the Gaza Strip, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said in a newspaper interview published Wednesday.

Sharon's comments were his most detailed yet on his long-term vision for the region. Palestinian officials said the remarks confirmed their fears that Israel plans to draw its own borders and keep a large chunk of the West Bank, rather than negotiate a peace deal with the Palestinians, as envisioned by the road map.

2. Why follow a road map
where there is no road?

3. The thing that worries me
even though I spent ages down in the basement, I still have no clear idea exactly what israel wants

Even this statement, like all the statements, seems to come through 'a haze of static' so I can't quite discern what the message is.

This must be done on purpose, possibly because people might not like what israel really wants.

My best guess at the moment is that israel wants the West Bank and the Palestinians there get booted over the river into Jordan, of course the process gently spread out over a few years so as not to impinge on anybodies sense of injustice in the West.

4. Thinking about it
there isn't anything 'physically' stopping israel right now from kicking the Palestinians out of the West Bank, they could do it with two hands tied behind their backs.

It is just the 'morality' thing where they would get it in the neck. They might get their 3 bn cut off, no enterance into the EU, etc, etc.

Much better policy to have your cake and eat it, I think, to kick the Palestinians out of the West Bank without getting the moral backlash. Just some subtle and patient arranging needed.

6. Which is why
possibly the so called 'Peace Fence' isn't actually that at all, it is more designed to keep the pot boiling, so that later, under the guise of 'combating terrorism', israel gets to nick some more stuff.

7. Ah, the "road map"
I almost forgot about it. I don't think bush ever mentioned it at the convention. He also didn't mention the trip to mars or 250,000 jobs a month.

10. Sadly, the US taxpayers will be responsible
Israel has used US foreign aid money to continually build illegal settlements.

Now Sharon will pay Gaza settlers to leave...$100,000 or more, I read, the other day, & they are asking for more aid money to accomplish this.
