Sudan: UN health agency survey shows high death rates in Darfur crisis
More than 200 internally displaced persons (IDPs) are dying every day in North and West Darfur in Sudan because of diseases caused by the crowded, unhygienic conditions in camps there or because of violent attacks, according to a survey released today by the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO).

The agency said the survey's results surpass the accepted threshold for a humanitarian crisis - usually measured at one death per 10,000 people per day - in two of the three regions of Darfur, a vast, impoverished section of western Sudan roughly the size of France that has been beset by conflict and massive displacement since early last year.

In West Darfur, the crude mortality rate is 2.9 deaths per 10,000 people, while in North Darfur the rate is 1.5 deaths. South Darfur was not measured because of security problems there, and the survey included 1,500 households and covered the period from mid-June to mid-August.

The figures indicate that an average of 144 IDPs are dying each day in West Darfur and another 57 in North Darfur, between three and six times the expected rate.

1.  Sudan Minister Contests Number of Dead
KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) - A Sudanese government minister denied new U.N. estimates that as many as 10,000 displaced people are dying from disease and violence each month in Darfur, saying Tuesday that the numbers were mistaken and insisting the health situation in the region was "normal."

2. I hope there is a follow up to this story;
btw, I don't know the credibility of this source;

Syria tested chemical arms on civilians in Darfur region: press

BERLIN
: Syria tested chemical weapons on civilians in Sudan's troubled western Darfur region in June and killed dozens of people.

The German daily Die Welt newspaper, in an advance release of its Wednesday edition, citing unnamed western security sources, said that injuries apparently caused by chemical arms were found on the bodies of the victims.

....
....
According to Die Welt, the Syrians had suggested close cooperation on developing chemical weapons, and it was proposed that the arms be tested on the rebel SPLA, the Sudan People's Liberation Army, in the south.

But given that the rebels were involved in peace talks, the newspaper continued, the Sudanese government proposed testing the arms on people in Darfur.

Details of what were in the weapons were not disclosed.

The Sudanese government has been accused of arming and backing Arab militias, known as Janjaweed, which have rampaged through the western Darfur region for the past 19 months.

This sounds like an October surprise? nawww,
I doubt the US main stream media well follow up on this German article.

There was a rally/protest sunday in front of the UN that people ( Africans ) demand the UN stop debating compromised wording to their resolutions and act

hey !
Sudan has oil !...
Its a fact the Chinese and Pakastani's draw from that governments oil tap.

? How will they vote on the Sudan resoultion issues ?

It would be interesting but as I said,
I highly doubt main stream cares about those human rights issues and more importantly, connecting dots......That oil isn't US intrests,
It's the Chinese interests' ;)

This is an issue that will be around Nov 3rd and beyond.
