'Gates of hell' are open in Iraq, warns Arab League chief
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20040914/wl_mideast_afp/arab_ministers&cid=1514&ncid=1473

CAIRO (AFP) - Arab League chief Amr Mussa warned that the "gates of hell" had been opened in Iraq (news - web sites), as ministers gathered for a meeting set to be dominated by the war-ravaged country and an ongoing crisis over Syria's role in Lebanon.

The session opened as at least 60 people were killed in two deadly attacks by suspected Sunni Arab insurgents in and around Baghdad.

"The gates of hell are open in Iraq," Mussa said in his opening speech, voicing hope that Arab foreign ministers could "help Iraq through this crisis, reestablish sovereignty throughout the country and end the American occupation."

His comments echoed a declaration by French President Jacques Chirac, one of the most vocal opponents to the US-led war in Iraq, who compared the situation there to a Pandora's box.

1. The Gates of Hell!
It kind of sounds like things are pretty bad and getting a lot worse fast.

One Ret. General on Lehrer said the only way Iraq will settle down is if the Americans leave. Of course, we won't have any say in the kind of government they end up with. But it doesn't look like we will now.

Anarchists! Not terrorists. So Afghanistan ends up the heroin and opium capital of the world. And Iraq ends up with the Taliban.

What irony.

3. This situation is screwed beyond all repair,
someone needs to seriously start talkng about getting our guys out of there before something real bad happens. I think Kerry should do this. As more and more bad news continues to come out, I think it will allow him to start moving in this direction. All he has to argue is that, yes, I initially supported the resolution, but Bush has fucked this up beyond all comprehension, and it is now irreparable (well, not in exactly those words).:) I have had a real bad feeling that something big is going to happen that is going ot inflict a lot of casualties on our side. I know they have blast shields, barriers, etc. but the insurgents will keep hammering away and eventually one will get lucky and drive a carbomb into the middle of a chow hall or something and kill a couple hundred in one shot.

5. For every son, daughter, father, mother who has been killed in Iraq,
there are dozens of brothers, cousins, uncles, aunts, grandfathers and the like who may now be considering what it's worth to avenge their innocent relative's life. Yes... I am sure the terrorists endorse shrub all the way. What a simpleton.
