Bush to visit Las Vegas next week to address National Guard group

Friday, September 10, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(09-10) 17:35 PDT LAS VEGAS (AP) --

President Bush is scheduled to return to Nevada next week -- his third trip this year -- to address the annual conference of the National Guard Association of the United States.

Bush will speak Tuesday to the more than 3,000 officers gathering at the Las Vegas Convention Center for the group's 126th annual meeting.

Democratic challenger John Kerry also accepted an invitation to speak at the conference on Thursday. It will be Kerry's fourth trip to Las Vegas this year.

Neither speech is open to the public, and no public events have been announced during either candidate's visit.

6. He's going to give them some tips on how to
duck their service and get away with it. Tip #1: have a politically powerful father.

15. Last time he got a couple of thousand
But if the convention is in a casino, it'll be damn near impossible to get anywhere remotely near -- we'd almost be better off in a first amendment zone.

AURORA, Colo. (AP) - President Bush is honoring the sacrifice of National Guardsmen in Iraq and Afghanistan, noting their special role in the war on terror, and saying he also is proud of his own Vietnam-era stint as a citizen soldier.

Bush was not expected to address the controversy swirling around unexplained gaps in his service in the Texas Air National Guard in his address Tuesday to the 126th National Guard Association of the United States conference in Las Vegas.

The president was to express his pride in commanding the tens of thousands of guardsmen mobilized for the war on terror and other missions at home and abroad. In all, the Washington-based association says more than 225,000 guardsmen - roughly half the force - have been called to active duty since the terrorists attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Bush was speaking at the National Guard conference in the afternoon following a morning rally in Arapahoe County, Colo., to promote his health care agenda.
