U.S. Attacks an Iraqi City With Double-Edged Sword

<snip>

In the aftermath, the familiar conflicting reports emerged. The military lauded what it called a successful strike on the network of Abu Musab Zarqawi, the Jordanian militant thought to be behind a wave of car bombings, abductions and other attacks in Iraq.

But officials in Fallouja decried what they said was the killing of innocent civilians. Ten houses were destroyed, at least 16 civilians were killed and more than 20 were injured, officials said.

Neither account could be independently confirmed.

Fallouja is considered the heart of Iraq's Sunni-led insurgency, which has stymied U.S.-led reconstruction efforts and thwarted the interim government. Unable to enter the town since the spring, U.S. forces have turned to an intense bombing campaign. The strategy seems to straddle the thin line between hurting the insurgency and enraging the citizenry.

"Every time, they justify it by saying they are striking militants, but there are never any militants killed," Sheik Ahmed Abdel Ghafour, a leading member of the Muslim Scholars Assn., said Monday on Al Arabiya, an Arabic-language television network.

The Hand-Over That Wasn't: Illegal Orders give the US a Lock on Iraq's Economy
by Antonia Juhasz

Officially, the U.S. occupation of Iraq ended on June 28, 2004. But in reality, the United States is still in charge: Not only do 138,000 troops remain to control the streets, but the "100 Orders" of L. Paul Bremer III remain to control the economy.

These little noticed orders enacted by Bremer, the now-departed head of the now-defunct Coalition Provisional Authority, go to the heart of Bush administration plans in Iraq. They lock in sweeping advantages to American firms, ensuring long-term U.S. economic advantage while guaranteeing few, if any, benefits to the Iraqi people.

The Bremer orders control every aspect of Iraqi life - from the use of car horns to the privatization of state-owned enterprises. Order No. 39 alone does no less than "transition from a … centrally planned economy to a market economy" virtually overnight and by U.S. fiat.

Although many thought that the "end" of the occupation would also mean the end of the orders, on his last day in Iraq Bremer simply transferred authority for the orders to Prime Minister Iyad Allawi - a 30-year exile with close ties to the CIA and British intelligence.

12. I was wondering today if chimpass* actually watched the carnage on TV
if he watches I can just picture that perverted smirk on his face, the one he has every time he talks about torture death. Yes, I believe the warped one actually actually gets off on the death and destruction he has caused.

8. And here's what happened on Hayfa St. Sunday
According to the AP, one Bradley armored vehicle raced
down Hayfa
Street to the aid of a US patrol and was disabled by a car
bomb at
6:50am, according to the US military. The American
propaganda
mouthpieces claimed that the four crewmen on the
Bradley escaped
with only "minor injuries," but then they came under
rocket-
propelled grenade and automatic weapons
fire.

The local correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that
the
Resistance attacked a US convoy of 10 Bradley
armored vehicles at
about 7:00am, destroying one of them and disabling a second
in
addition to killing nine US troops. The correspondent
reported that
the US sent reinforcements – consisting of 11
additional armored
vehicles - right away and that fighting was still raging at
12:19
local time when his report was filed. An SBG-9 was used
to destroy
the Bradley, the correspondent
reported.

Mafkarat al-Islam's correspondent reported that at least 10
US
troops were killed on Hayfa Street Sunday when
Resistance fighters
attacked and destroyed two US
tanks.

Four US helicopters of the Apache and Black Hawk type were
at that
moment prowling the sky over the area, shooting randomly
at people
in the streets and at the residences in the
area.

The Americans called in air support and a US Kiowa
helicopter
appeared and fired on the wrecked armored vehicle in
an attempt to
prevent the Iraqi masses from obtaining the weaponry
and explosives.

5. I think I have been here before.
Is it not odd that these countries do not like someone from out side ruling them? Now we are going to do to the North, on that country, what we have done in the South and Middle part. I can face the fact we have not won a war since WW2 and I guess the rest of the USA better do that. If they recall that war, we had a little help like Russia, Brits, Canada and some more countries.Time we faced up to the fact we can not rule the world and other people do not like us to try.

9. I'm so sick of this rhetoric. I said in April of 2003, when our soldiers
fired into the protestors wanting them to vacate the school they had occupied that it would come to this. Insurgents, freedom fighters, terrorists, Al Quaeda, it's all BS. What would you do if your town had been occupied by a foreign nation after the "mission" was accomplished. Your town had no part in the battle and everything was fine until the occupying forces rolled into town several weeks after the regime had been toppled and set up camp in your kids school?

Okay, we all get together peacefully and march upon the town square where the school is and all we want is for the occupying forces to leave the school, so that our kids can go to school. These forces fire into our crowd, several are killed and many are wounded. How would you feel? Remember this is your town. This is your kids school, all you want is the normalcy that you have had these last few years. Its gone in an instant. You just saw your best friend shot down, your neighbor wounded.

It all goes downhill from there. If it was here in the US, if it was China occupying the US as a threat to the world, what would you do?

What our country has done in Fallujah is a crime. And we the people of this country, we let it happen. How many of our soldiers and how many innocent Iraqis have died for stupidity? This is so wrong.

10. Israel taking US casualties from Iraq
The Palestinian weekly al-Manar published in Jerusalem
has learned
that US troops wounded in Iraq are now being flown to
occupied
Palestine for medical treatment. The sources report that US
field
hospitals and other medical facilities set up in Iraq have
been
overwhelmed with casualties, particularly in the last four
months,
and as a result an agreement to use facilities in "Israel"
was
concluded.

11. B-52's used in Tall 'Afar
US forces continue to encircle the area of Tall `Afar on all
sides.
American F-16 and F-18 fighter bombers are pounding the
area with
various types of explosives, including internationally-
banned
cluster bombs. On Thursday the same area was subjected to
an
intense US bombardment in which B-52 strategic bombers
were used.

After getting into the city of Tall `Afar Friday evening
the
correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam described the tragic state
of the
city in the wake of intensive US bombardment. US forces,
he said,
had used cluster bombs and
napalm.
