Manpower: Firms stick to same plans for three quarters
By Andrea Coombes, CBS.MarketWatch.com
Last Update: 12:01 AM ET Sept. 14, 2004

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- While twice as many employers plan to hire workers in the fourth quarter than did last year at this time, firms aren't budging from their hiring intentions for the two most recent quarters, according to the latest Manpower Employment Outlook survey.

Twenty percent of employers plan to add to their work force in the fourth quarter, compared with 10 percent last year, but the figure is unchanged from the 20 percent of firms who said they would hire in both the second and third quarters this year.

But "employers continue to demonstrate caution," she said. Manpower doesn't ask employers for the reasons behind their intentions, but Beck speculated that caution "is linked to ... the rise in oil prices and the staggering rise of health-care costs."

1. Oh, the media IS talking about this:
NPR this morning said job growth was just GLORIOUS and that it was the best in 5 years.

I'm serious. They did say that.

2. It's expensive to hire
Salaries, health care costs, payroll taxes and ancillary costs all make hiring expensive and risky in an unclear economic environment.
