Finding support a picnic for Keyes
URBANA – Former Illinois governors Jim Edgar and Jim Thompson might not be willing to endorse Alan Keyes' underdog bid for the U.S. Senate, but a large crowd at the Champaign County Republican fall picnic on Sunday found his moralistic approach to politics much to their liking.

snip..........

Quoting Abraham Lincoln, Keyes said that if American liberty is ever lost, it will not be due to an external force or enemy.

"It will be due to our loss of moral character," he said. "Our moral character is at stake. The fundamental institution of our life, the family, is under attack."

He then criticized Obama for his opposition to a constitutional amendment that would restrict marriage to two people of the opposite sex, saying Obama would "let our families perish."

snip.........

"He voted three times to continue the practice of infanticide," Keyes said. "Could Christ do that? Obviously, since Barack Obama supports something that Jesus Christ couldn't support ... I'm arguing no Christian worth his name should vote for him."

2. He's right you know - This Country will be lost because
our moral character is at stake.

We have sold our souls to corporate interests - I don't know what he is babbling about, but he has the original statement correct.

3. Yep...our loss of moral character will be to blame...
That loss can be seen in, say, people who like to take their wives to sex clubs for a different type of public happy hour.

4. The crowd was so "large"...
Edited on Mon Sep-13-04 12:56 PM by Tempest
They didn't even give an estimate.

Considering it's Keyes, a "large" crowd probably consisted of 30-40 people.

Everyone else is staying as far away from the self-righteous idiot as they can.

On Edit:

From the article - "And they cheered his impassioned speech, delivered without a microphone".

Okay, now we get an idea of how "large" the crowd really was.

LOL!

5. what happened to keyes?
I remember when he ran for president in '96, and even though I was never a fan or his, he seemed like an eloquent, smart, and even-tempered person...he is just the extremist's extreme now...

8. Just announced on the radio (no link)
Keyes announced in a closed door meeting of about 20 IL GOP members (yesterday?) that he plans to keep up the controversy every day between now and the election. He came to the race late, he doesn't have a lot of funding, so the more outrageous he is, the more free publicity he'll get from the media.

The news announcer mentioned that the source for this story was at the meeting but asked not to be named because it would cause more division in an already deeply divided party.
