Amnesty Condemns U.S. Use Of Racial Profiling
AFP: 9/13/2004

WASHINGTON, Sept 13 (AFP) - Racial profiling by US law enforcement agencies has increased over the past three years and now affects one in nine Americans, the Amnesty International rights group said in a report released Monday.

"State and federal agencies, under the guise of fighting terrorism, have expanded the use of this degrading, discriminatory and dangerous practice," said Curt Goering, deputy executive director for Amnesty Internaitonal USA.

According to its study, some 32 million Americans have been subject to profiling -- the targeting of people because of their ethnic or religious background.

1. Racial profiling rife in US
Washington - Targeting of people because of their racial background or religious affiliation is a deep-rooted problem in the US, with nearly 32 million people reporting they've been racially profiled, a human rights group said on Monday.

The report by Amnesty International USA also said at least 87 million people - one in three - in the country are at high risk of being victimised because they belong to a racial, ethnic or religious group whose members are commonly targeted by police for unlawful stops and searches.

Racial profiling is a growing problem as the government has expanded its war on terror, the report said.
