Poll: Kerry cements lead in Washington state
Poll: Kerry cements lead in Washington state

By DAVID AMMONS
AP POLITICAL WRITER

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Washington state, once considered a fiercely competitive presidential battleground, is firmly in Democrat John Kerry's column heading into the final weeks of a volatile campaign, according to a new poll commissioned by The Columbian.

Kerry, who considers the three West Coast states a key part of his electoral math to defeat President Bush, led the Republican president 51 percent to 42 percent among Washington respondents.
Snip---
Republicans haven't carried Washington since Ronald Reagan's re-election bid of 1984. The Bush-Cheney ticket lost the state by 5.6 percentage points in 2000.

The new poll suggests the trend will continue.

1. Washington state has been very encourging
Kerry should do better than Gore did. Now lets shore up Oregon.

4. those polls reflect that he will
It was Gore 50, Bush 45. Kerry can't just win King County by a lot and expect to win, he has to win the other western counties and narrow I think Edwards would be useful here narrow the margin in Eastern Washington. That's how Clinton won by solid margins. I think Kerry can do it.

12. He'll win Pierce and Kitsap counties...
.. if the primaries are any indication of Democratic voting and turn out.. we squashed the republicans. East of the Cascades is where you'll find the concentrated Bush supporters.. and perhaps around the military bases, though I'm finding the Tacoma area to have a ton of Kerry supporters, and Veterans For Kerry, around. Olympic Peninsula will go to Kerry. Thurston County will go to Kerry... and more..

16. Kitsap is mostly liberal?
I plan on moving there someday if I can ever land a job in Washingston State. I visited that area and stayed there for about a week in Silverdale, I LOVED it, it seems like it'd be a liberal area overall.

17. Looks good in Oregon, too
We got your back, neighbors and friends in Washington.

Kerry leads in Oregon

Sen. John Kerry leads President Bush 51 percent to 44 percent in Oregon, according to a new poll conducted for the Portland Tribune and KOIN (6).
The survey, taken Sept. 13-16, also showed Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden with a comfortable lead over Republican challenger Al King. Wyden, seeking a second six-year term, led King in the poll 58 percent to 31 percent, with 11 percent of the respondents undecided.
The survey also showed three incumbent Democratic state officials — Secretary of State Bill Bradbury, Attorney General Hardy Myers and Treasurer Randall Edwards — all leading for re-election.

2. How funny
The Vancouver Columbian had a headline today calling the race "tight," even though it showed Kerry with an eight point lead.

7. we pull bush supporters from their cadillacs
Edited on Wed Sep-22-04 05:22 PM by maxsolomon
& pummel them senseless!

no quarter!

on edit: its simply stunning that 42% of washington is pro-bush. in the seattle bubble he's hated by an estimated 5 to 1 margin. on my street, its more like 50 to 1. and its a street of rich fucks. the only bush supporters are so old i'm holding out hope they die in the next month. at the office we have ONE republican out of 150 architects.

10. Kerry is probably up by 20, but polling methods have not changed to meet
Edited on Wed Sep-22-04 05:49 PM by Zorra
shifts in voter circumstances. So many people have lost income and employment since Bu$h took power, and younger people have fewer land line telephones, and many are cohabiting with a number of roommates or living with their parents because they cannot afford housing. So polls are pretty sketchy nowadays.

Also there are so many new voters that have registered to vote against Bu$h who are not polled.

9. I think she'll win decisively
In the recent primary, Dem votes were 350,000 and Pug votes were 200,000. Not many Dems will vote for Nethercutt.

11. He has it cemented here in MY area of Washington..
..and believe, me.. I don't live in a particularly liberal area! Where I am, it's rather affluent/conservative, and military. Kerry bumper stickers outnumber the Bush ones 4 to 1 this week. I don't count signs... the signs in this area are 20 to 1 republican, but they've been put on mostly public streets at an alarming rate, and the democratic ones have been stolen at an equally alarming rate. Someone is paying a company to put up republican signs.. they are akin to litter at this point. I vow to vote for the people with the least signs littering out beautiful area.

13. Wa is a great state for Dems, but
mainly in Seattle area, though it's densely populated. I am woried about Skagit and Whatcom, they're geting denser (in more ways than one) all the time. at the same time I'm astounded that Gore won WA by only 5%, that is pretty scary. This a prety politically active town, though, remember WTO? we have really been getting out the vote, and getting the Uni students which helps a lot.

I am very grateful to live in Seattle, there are very few places in the US like Cap Hill where same sex couple can walk around holding hands without fear or shame, that alone says a great deal about Seattle's political philosphies.

I am worried about this Rossi character-Locke has been pretty useless, but at least he didn't screw things up too much.

He should focus on other places. Like NM, NV, CO.
