By Andy Sullivan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Voting activists on Wednesday enlisted computer experts, a trained monkey and a man on a hunger strike in a last-minute pitch to convince officials to improve the security of electronic vote-counting systems.

With six weeks to go before the Nov. 2 presidential election, activists said officials still have time to set up a paper trail as a counterweight to an electronic voting system they portrayed as wide open to manipulation.

"It's not too late; there are some security measures we can put in place," said Bev Harris, executive director of the activist group Black Box Voting.

The debate over electronic voting has largely centered on touch-screen systems like Diebold Inc.'s AccuVote-TS, which will be used by roughly one in three voters this November.

But a far greater threat is posed by the software used to tabulate votes on the county level, which counts not only electronic votes but those cast using traditional paper-based methods, Harris and others said.

Snip ......

1. "It's not too late"
The tabulation of votes by computers will allow GWB to steal this election.

Don't, for one second, think they haven't thought about it.

They have this election rigged and it's rigged through the software programming.

We've all got to get down to the election office and see too it that the software gets a good going over by someone who can read that shit, because your average Supervisor of elections can't.

It's not too late.........

2. This'll piss some people off here
But if the idiots in charge of putting these machines in the voting districts don't demand safeguards to ensure the integrity of the vote, I hope someone does "Hack the Vote". Maybe 4 years of President Kevin Mitnick will wake someone up. Sorry, I just can't stand the idiocy of the people supposedly trying to protect the integrity of our elections.

5. My definition
Knowing there's a flaw in the design and doing nothing to correct it. Would you fly in a plane if you knew the landing gear had problems?

6. And also
My post was not putting down Bev and Andy, but the people who choose not to listen to them. Not sure if you took it that way or not.

7. Tell me more about this Kevin Mitnick
I already like him better than Bush but where's he at on reinstating the Fairness Doctrine?

4. Do voters have the option
of demanding a paper ballot, or not? I have read this somewhere and would like to know whether it's true. If so, why not get out an e-mail through the DNC about it?

9. Not in Georgia.
You can get a 'provisional ballot", which is paper, if you do not appear on the voter roll, or if your eligibility is challenged, but otherwise, you WILL vote electronic! For an absentee ballot, you have to meet certain conditions, like not be here on election day, or be over 75 (?) . Doubtful if they would check this stuff out, but if they did, I believe it is a felony to cheat. Besides, this guy is on the election board...

8. REPOST: An MS Access database and a telephone modem
coupled to an ES&S software system that is in its
third release for Diebold systems and has a well known two-digit
trap door.

My six year old child could hack this. Can't wait for
election night as left and right leaning hackers diddle
with the system. Can see the talking heads now, "ABC
is calling Ohio for Bush", "Ooops, ABC is now calling
Ohio for Kerry", "Oops!!...", "Sorry ..." "Once again ..."
