'Fahrenheit 9/11' Maker's UA Talk Has Campus Republicans Hot
<snip>

Filmmaker Michael Moore is bringing his controversial rant against President Bush to the University of Arizona. And the plan to bring in a costly, left-leaning speaker isn't going over well with campus Republicans.

The outspoken movie maker, whose film "Fahrenheit 9/11" has been a box-office smash and raised conservative hackles this campaign season, will speak at UA's McKale Center on Oct. 11 as part of the Associated Students of the University of Arizona Speaker's series.

And...

"We strongly support congressman Kolbe, but the issue is that they're paying $27,500 for Michael Moore to come and they're not paying Jim Kolbe to come," he said. Ascencio said Moore normally is paid $40,000 for speaking.

Efforts to bring marquee conservative speakers to UA have proven too costly, Ascencio said, noting that Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly's price tag was $100,000 and Hannity's, $60,000.

Maybe that's why Kerry is pulling his ad buys from Arizona, LOL!!!

3. WAAAAAAAHHH!!!
"We have talked numerous times to student senators about bringing on (conservative) speakers like Ann Coulter or Sean Hannity, and we've been told time and again that they won't pay to bring partisan political speakers here," said Pete Seat, a UA senior and state chairman of the College Republicans. "Now here comes Michael Moore."

7. He is doing it on the cheap
For pity's sake, Moore's normal fee is less than half what O'Really charges, and he's lowered it for them. And these panty-waists are whining? Why don't they whine to Hannity and see what it gets them?

As far as a Congressman, if the University is in his district, why should he be paid?

Morans.

Not All UA Eager for Michael Moore (AZ Daily Star)

<snip>
ASUA is strictly nonpartisan, Ascencio said. As evidence, he noted that David T. Hardy, author of "Michael Moore Is a Big Fat Stupid White Man," will speak on campus Oct. 7 - two days after "Fahrenheit 9/11" is released on DVD.
</snip>

So having someone there who has written a book EXPRESSLY about Michael Moore isn't enough balance?

12. Michael Moore coming to Dickinson College
in Carlisle, PA, where I teach, on Oct. 5. The "balancing" act here is going to be Jonah Goldberg some weeks later. College officials are pretty uptight about security for Moore, and they have received some hostile reaction from the community (heavily Republican) but the college president is standing firm. I wrote my weekly newspaper column about all this, if anyone is interested:

www.cumberlink.com/articles/2004/09/23/editorial/rich_lewis/lewis02.txt

If anyone want to e-mail the president to comment on his stance, his address is durden@dickinson.edu

Moore visit appropriate for college
By Rich Lewis, September 2, 2004

When listening to Bill Durden, you sometimes get the feeling he was born in the wrong century.
Not that he's doing so badly in the 21st, firmly settled into the prestigious position of president of Dickinson College.
Still, Durden's undisguised passion for old-fashioned civic virtues suggests he would have been quite comfortable wearing breeches and penning proclamations alongside the American revolutionaries of the 18th century — figures he openly admires, and some of whom were instrumental in establishing, in 1783, the college he has headed since 1999.
When Durden talks about things like political involvement, community service and individual liberties and responsibilities, you find few traces of the weary cynicism and dismissive irony so characteristic of "post-modern" culture, including academic culture. He takes it all very seriously — and gets visibly upset when he suspects others are not.
I got a good dose of that indignation this week when we talked about local reaction to the news that Michael Moore has accepted an invitation to speak on campus in October.
Durden is disturbed that a number of people immediately called to condemn the college for inviting the film-maker and writer, whose documentary attacking the Bush administration's war on Iraq, "Fahrenheit 9/11," became an international sensation.
"These are simply vicious calls," Durden says. "The anger is so visceral, and so against the American principle of free speech. But these are people who are clearly uninformed about basic American principles."
One comment came from a woman he encountered at the Carlisle Farmer's Market, where he was chatting about the Moore visit with a group of Dickinson students selling produce from the college's organic garden.
"She overheard us talking and said to me, 'My husband is outraged, simply incensed. He is a veteran and can't believe the college is doing this.'"
Durden was "baffled" by the remark.
"Having worn the uniform" as a member of ROTC while student at Dickinson in the late 1960s, and as an officer in the reserves for eight years, he asks: "What do we assume the people who fought in our wars were fighting for? It was for freedom of speech and all our other principles.
Durden is "just stunned" by the wave of hostile comments because they reveal a "misunderstanding of why America was founded and what we are fighting for. And if people believe we are fighting for one political party, we are in trouble."
Frankly, I assumed the college expected to get bashed from the right on this one. To many conservatives, Moore is the devil himself.
But Durden claims he didn't see it coming.
"No, we didn't anticipate it. We believe this is a mature community."
Moore's visit is part of Durden's larger campaign to get Dickinson students involved in the political process in a year he believes will shape the country's future.
"We are very concerned about students getting engaged and Moore is raising issues and engaging conversation in a good way," he says.
Though he didn't find "Fahrenheit 9/11" to be "a particularly good film," it "provoked me to think." He recognizes that Moore isn't "particularly fair at all times" and takes what he has to say "with a grain of salt."
Still, Moore is "catching the imagination of the people" and thus is a catalyst for action.
Durden is also a bit stung that anyone would wonder why such a huge celebrity would want to visit here. He notes that even the student newspaper, The Dickinsonian, "starts off its story about Moore by asking how did a little college like Dickinson get this national star?"
To which he replies: "Why not? We are a national college. Carlisle is an interesting community. Why do we have all this self-doubt?"
Durden says that some who are criticizing the college for inviting Moore seem not to have noticed that a conservative commentator, Jonah Goldberg, will speak on campus later that month, a point made prominently in The Sentinel's Aug. 27 story that broke the news that Moore is coming.
"The assumption some people are making is that we wouldn't be sharp enough to have a balanced opinion. There was an assumption of guilt against the school."
Truth be told, Goldberg, the editor of National Review Online — and the son of Lucianne Goldberg, the publicist and Clinton-hater who famously egged Linda Tripp into recording her chats with Monica Lewinsky — is only a middle-of-the-order hitter among talking heads. He is clearly not in the same league with Moore. Then again, who is at the moment?
The notorious Ann Coulter was on the college's short list of possible invitees (that would have been a hoot), but Durden says the Goldberg-Moore pairing is better because Goldberg covered the Democratic convention for USA Today and Moore is covering the Republican convention for the same paper.
I somewhat disingenuously asked Durden whether the hostile feedback had caused him to doubt the wisdom of inviting Moore — not to find out the answer, which I knew, but for the pleasure of hearing him express it.
"Are you kidding?" he almost shouted. "No way! This is what we stand for. We were founded for this. This is freedom of speech and our educational responsibility."
He also acknowledged that more trouble might be on the way insofar as word of Moore's visit probably hasn't reached many of Dickinson's far-flung alumni.
"I would expect that a lot of them aren't going to be happy," he mused. "But if they've had a Dickinson education, they should be able to handle it."

MM is speaking Oct 20 at a state university campus in Utah County (aka mormon country). Conservatives are pissed. Some nut case (I've heard its the prez of our state senate but can't confirm) has introduced legislation to get rid of student fees (paid by the students to support stuff like this) because of it.

They can give it but they can't take it. After 8 long years of Clinton is a murderer, with no proof. Now they won't allow a movie that is accurate.

38. Michael Moore in Kansas City next week

Anybody in the K.C. area, heads up. This hasn't been publicized much, but he'll be at the Uptown Theatre next week. It is a little confusing concerning tickets. But it will sellout fast since it seats less than 2000.

I can't promise the following to be totally accurate since I'm known to get about 90% of everything wrong, but that still puts me ahead of the current administration.

If you go to this website and purchase "The Fahrenheit 911 Reader" you get one ticket to the event. If you purchase "Will They Ever Trust Us Again?", you receive two tickets. You can pick up the tickets as of today. Those with stamped tickets get their books autographed by authors.
