Stations Get E-Mails to Oust Dan Rather
By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer

NEW YORK - Station managers at several CBS affiliates said Thursday they appear to be a target of a national e-mail campaign placing pressure on the network to oust Dan Rather as anchorman of the "CBS Evening News."

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=8&u=/ap/20040923/ap_on_en_tv/cbs_guard_18

************************************

I strongly recommend that you contact CBS with an e-mail of support for Dan Rather as well as your local CBS affiliate.

You can send CBS News a message here:

http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/home/main100.shtml

Go to the bottom of the page and click on "Contact Us" and a form will come up.

7. Here's what I sent:
My understanding is that there is a move afoot by some to remove Dan Rather from his job at CBS. This would be the worst thing you could do. His brave and coherent reporting from Nixon to now is a voice of integrity crying in a wilderness of butt-licking me-tooers on other networks controlled by foreigners and former CIA heads. Keep him as long as he wants to stay!

Hope this helps!

19. mine was: this message is in support of Dan rather and with the
inaccuracies given as fact by other news services Dan is entitled to one on a long career that has been a great service to our country, to put it in context Dan merely "misspoke" which seems pretty presidential today

59. Here's what I sent:
I know its tough right now, but I for one completely support both Dan Rather and CBS news for the guts to do what seems to be out of fashion: investigative reports on Bush.
Not that I care that much that Bush's TANG records were likely "cleansed". I care MORE about the damage Bush is doing NOW to Iraq, to world stability, to the dignity of the office of president.
I applaud your efforts, I stand behind you, and I encourage you to continue to be doing your job as journalists: seeking truth to promote the public's RIGHT to know.

2. The freepers and rathergate.com have a new program
to use to spam all the CBS affiliates. They write one email and the program generates fifty seperate emails to go one each to each affiliate.

When you write CBS make sure they are aware of the rabid right's program. They are using fake email spamming to complain about fake memos. How ironic is that?

43. You can try, I did, but also send one directly to CBS because
the freeper site says they review the email before sending it on. The freeper site only wants complaints so they may just dump your email.

I used their site and then also sent a seperate email directly to

mailto:60Minutes@cbsnews.com

Just to make sure CBS got at least one positive email from me.

Edited on Thu Sep-23-04 09:48 PM by Concerned GA Voter
There's supposedly no provided message with it, so really we could use it to contact everyone & tell them what these assholes are up to.

On edit: Forget what I said above. Apparently the people who run the site screen all the emails before they're sent.

From the site: "Please be patient while we process your email. We take the time to try and make sure nothing offensive or inappropriate gets sent, so it's pretty labor intensive."

63. Just sent it though the freeps and to CBS
Simply said,

"Apparently it is OK for our govt. to take us to war on forged documents where soldiers and innocent civilians are dying. But another forged document which basically contains accurate info causes an uproar for an investigation. Don't cave-in..." etc

I had just wrote my local affiliate last week ripping them a new asshole for pre-empting the second part of the piece last week.
They wrote and told me that it had been decided weeks ago to air a special on Alzheimer's. Does that mean they "forgot" that 60 Minutes is one of their highest rated shows. Asses.

I'm sure the tone and the grammer of the emails in support will make a nice contrast to the garbage that's no doubt filling up thier inboxes courtesy of the freepers.

This is what I sent:

"Over the last five years I have given up on TV as a source for my news. However, with this dustup over Dan Rather and his attempt to do journalism - a welcome sight in these troubled times, I am letting you know that from now on CBS and Dan Rather will be my ONLY source for television news.
Dan Rather should be commended for his efforts. It is up to news journalists to bring the truth to the American people, to be a watchdog on government. When media fails, tyrants win."

Just go to the ISP and tell them that they have a spamming tool that is a clear and present violation of the Acceptable Use Policy.

smooooch.

RE; DAN RATHER IS A DECENT & COURAGEOUS MAN, A HERO.

Dear Station Manager,

I am aware that the 30% lunatic fringe has been writing you
demanding that Dan Rather, CBS, and his programming be removed
from your line-up. Dan Rather had the courage to report on
Watergate and he is one of the few who can be counted on to have
the courage and integrity to report on matters of critical interest
to Americans. He is one of the few who makes the effort to maintain
a free press, a commodity that has become rare in the propagandized pap
Americans are fed today in substitute for news.

Unlike the current resident of the White House, when he has made a
mistake he has the courage and integrity to admit and apologize for it.

Should you choose to fold under the pressure of a small but organized lunatic fringe, I will not be watching your station, and I will be certain to advise my church, my friends, and your sponsors why I won't
be tuning in now or ever in the future.

Thank you for your consideration

Very truly yours

26. If you can, use the above list and write your own e-mail
Most ISPs will let you send or cc: or bcc: to 25 to 50 recipients. Try slicing the list into fifths, and let 'em know they're being spammed by dirty trickster Mike Krempasky, who has heavily advertised this site.

... and don't forget to let them know that Rather did the right thing -- and if anyone deserves firing it's Bill O'Reilly, not Rather (or something to that effect).

32. My E-mail to Dan Rather/CBS:
I wanted to put in my two cents, since I understand that the right-wing has sent out marching orders to deluge CBS with hate-mail about Dan Rather.

First of all, let's face it - most of these fanatics depend on Fox News to filter their news and do their thinking for them. They're just doing as they're told.

I have appreciated Dan Rather since I was old enough to switch on the television set. I'm 37 years old now, and I still find Dan Rather to be a national treasure. I want to chime in with my voice of support for CBS News and 60 Minutes and Dan Rather. Thanks for everything you do.

Please listen to the people who actually WATCH - not these mental lemmings who are only out for blood.

Keep the faith, Dan.

38. Well, here's mine
My subject line was: I support Dan Rather and CBS News

**********************************************

Hello,

First off, I wanted you to be aware, if you aren't already, that I got your e-mail address from:

http://www.rathergate.com/

So if you've been inundated with e-mails demanding Dan Rather's head, you can thank Mike Krempasky and his neocon minions. He's even asking for donations to pay for his bandwidth!

However, I want you to know that I support Dan Rather and Mary Mapes and I don't think they did anything wrong. If anything, there is more to this story, isn't there. They need to find out who created the false documents, because obviously it's not someone in the Kerry camp. Besides, it doesn't change the facts about Bush's service in the TANG. He WAS absent for several months, he didn't report for a physical and he did get grounded. He received preferential treatment to get into the TANG in the first place, then he didn't serve his full time. How "honorable" is that?

While they're at it, perhaps Mary and Dan can find out the 500 names on the TANG waiting list that Bush got to leap frog over. Now there's a story. Who served in Vietnam in Bush's place? Who took a bullet for him? Who came home less than whole? Who came home in a box? George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and Karl Rove are the ones who are dishonorable, not Dan Rather or anyone at CBS news.

Also, thank you for being part of the network that broke the hideous Abu Ghraib story. We have not forgotten.

Sincerely,

My Real Name

39. I sent them the following email in support...
Hi CBS news,

This email is in reference to the apparent email campaign by angry Bush supporters to try to oust Dan Rather from CBS. Let me just say that Dan Rather was hoodwinked into using some information that was unable to be verified. The information itself has NEVER been denied by the WH and the story itself has been all but confirmed by a large amount of circumstantial evidence and witness testimony. Another woman (Janet Linke) has come forth stating that her husband (TANG pilot Jan Peter Linke) took Bush's spot in the 111th because Bush was afraid to fly and she also said that her husband had stated that Killian wasn't fond of Bush and also thought he drank too much. "He was mucking up bad, Killian told us," Linke says. "He just became afraid to fly." I hope you support Dan to the extent that you will uncover the truth of this matter - that GW Bush was paranoid to fly due to excessive drinking, but especially cocaine use. He refused the physical because he was afraid he would test positive for illegal substances. His daddy got him out of harms way into Alabama & Boston where, of course, nobody ever saw him. Do not let up on this story - this guy (Bush) has proven over and over again that he has no shame and his family will try to take down anyone who questions them - DO NOT CAVE. I completely support Dan and CBS news on this issue.

Just taking a few moments to voice my support of Dan Rather. With so many newspeople playing dummies to the rightwing ventriloquists, it is a welcome change to have someone actually reporting news.
Whether or not the papers were fake (and as far as I know, they have not been proven to be forgeries)the news of their existence and their ascent to frontpage news is a great story. Forged or not, the information contained within them is not disputed by anyone.
Bush was AWOL, but he was not AWOL. If a tree falls in the woods.....If you're not prosecuted for desertion, then you must not be a deserter. If you are not seriously investigated by the SEC for dumping Harkin Oil stock as an insider trader, then you must not be guilty. It's been "vetted". Yeah.
More power to Dan Rather. And congratulations to CBS for backing him up.
Pandering to the minority will only get you so far. When the economy gets so bad that people can no longer afford cable "news", maybe some critical thinking skills will be developed by my fellow Americans. Bill O'Reilly, Hannity, Novaks, Carlson and the other, innumerable, talking heads will be out of work.
Long Live Dan Rather!

CBS haven't said where they obtained the fake documents, and as
they were such a poor effort at forgery, could someone have been
setting up Dan Rather, in order to discredit anything else that

52. Yes, he was set up, but .....
he did finally reveal his source, Bill Burkett. Burkett is now pissed because he says he swore Rather to secrecy and said that he told Rather that CBS would have to verify the documents on their own.

Well, CBS did their best and the documents, while fake, did contain FACTUAL information, which was verified by the typist Marian Knox.

So, Burkett says the documents were given to him at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo by an unknown person. Since we now know that they are fakes, this person, or whoever they were acting for, was not trying to hurt Bush, they were trying to hurt whoever was running against Bush (Burkett got the documents in 2000 I believe). So the big mystery now is who faked the documents.

The facts about Bush haven't changed. He did receive preferential treatment. He did get to leap frog over 500 other names on the waiting list to get into the TANG, and then he didn't complete his service. To me, the other big story here is for someone to find that list that Bush got to be put at the top of and find out who didn't get into the TANG and got deployed to Vietnam because of him. Who took a bullet for Bush? Who came home less than whole? Who came home in a box? Those are questions that could and should still be answered.

William Safire: Duping of CBS journalists was more than a 'dirty trick'
William Safire, New York Times
September 24, 2004 SAFIRE0924
Whoever, having devised any scheme or artifice to defraud transmits or causes to be transmitted by means of wire, radio or television communication in interstate or foreign commerce, any writings for the purpose of executing such scheme or artifice, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both.

U.S. Criminal Code, Chapter 63, Section 1343.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- At the root of what is today treated as an embarrassing blunder by duped CBS journalists may turn out to be a felony by its faithless sources.

Some person or persons conceived a scheme to create a series of false Texas Air National Guard documents and append a photocopied signature to one of them. The perpetrator then helped cause the fraudulent file to be transmitted by means of television communication to millions of voters for the purpose of influencing a federal election.

56. Well, here is mine...
Dear CBS news folks,

Now, I was none too happy about the hatchet job 60 minutes gave the Audi 5000. Not that I have a thing for Audis. I drive old Fords. But, it was a really sloppy job.

Then again, 60 Minutes has provided many decades of excellent journalism. Sure, once in a while, you make a mistake. But is that what happened recently?

Perhaps it was a mistake to trust the "memos" when we have many years of Rove dirty trick history to refer to. Perhaps it was a mistake to rely on them, when Mr. Barnes' testimony was compelling enough. We now see that the uproar over the "memos" has buried the very credible and as-yet unrefuted story of Mr. Bush's induction-of-privilege into the TANG, and his abandonment-of-privilege of his expected service in the AANG. Really, Mr. Bush can only deal with these issues by relying on Rovian machinations to deflect attention: CBS news was punked for Bushco.

Well, that's bad. But, it ain't the end of the world. Still, I greatly dislike the way this Bush-haha has pre-empted the big story on the Niger-yellowcake story.

Folks, the real problem here is how this will affect future reportage, not that CBS took a direct hit from the U-boat Rove. CBS was pursuing a noble cause: telling truth to power and informing the public. If I may offer a suggestion, from the safe distance and comfy confines of my living room many miles away from your offices and many careers away from broadcasting, I would like to suggest that you proceed at double, no, triple speed. Turn your craft into the fire. Rush the beach. Pour it on.

I saw it suggested that if CBS were to do the Niger story now, you would be a laughing stock. How is that different? There is no reason in America today. There is little critical thought. So, go for it. Better CBS goes down fighting, than with a whimper.

Better yet, CBS turns into the fire. CBS pours it on. CBS reports truth like truth ain't ever been reported before, and CBS survives. CBS lives to usher in a new age of reason and truth. CBS reaps the benefit of a new, young viewership who appreciates truth, and who will be stuck with the job of leading this nation out of this dark and confused time. What if CBS showed us what a commitment to excellence in journalism used to mean, and could mean again? It's not like it's really hard to catch Bushco in lies and deceit, is it?

And Dan leaves when Dan is good and ready to and not a moment sooner. Bad folksy metaphors be damned.

People, don't make me resort pirate-speak. Just don't give up the ship. We need CBS news now more than ever. Freedom needs 60 minutes.

Regards,

62. They just looked like a normal server space company to me..
they're located in Herndon, Virginia which is a DC suburb.
I looked for a client list but didn't see one. On the other hand, I don't think the one I use lists clients because they are mostly small private ones.
