Army wants 1,400 acres (in Hawai'i)
http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2004/Sep/23/ln/ln11a.html

The U.S. government wants to obtain 1,400 acres adjacent to Schofield Barracks for the Army's Stryker brigade through condemnation proceedings, an initial step toward bringing a new face for the service to Hawai'i and one that may be challenged by a group of Native Hawaiians.

The filing yesterday seeks to use eminent domain authority to obtain the Campbell Estate land south of Schofield Barracks. The land would be used as firing ranges and for training by the 20-ton Stryker armored vehicles.

Three Native Hawaiian organizations last month challenged the $1.5 billion Stryker brigade plan in federal court, saying the Army failed to consider locations other than Hawai'i for the fast-strike unit, which would include 291 Stryker vehicles.

<edit> this Stryker brigade in Hawai'i is not needed!!!... and once you give the Army land, you can never get it back!

5. It is indeed going on on Hawai'i (Big Island) as well
The 1400 acres refers only to the O'ahu lands. They also want about 20,000 acres on Hawai'i, to expand the Pohakuloa training area.

I saw a map put out by DMZ Hawai'i,

http://www.dmzhawaii.org

and the 20,000 acres (over 30 square miles, a huge chunk even on Big Island!) in question is between the existing training area and Waimea town (Kamuela), the island's third largest with about 8,000 people!!

Meanwhile the 1400 O'ahu acres are adjacent to an area where a recent brushfire threatened the habitat of the endangered 'elepaio bird. :grr:

Training on this scale may have made sense in the WWII era, when O'ahu was still largely rural, but it most certainly does not today. Let 'em tear up Crawford, I say!
