U.S. Troops in Iraq Gather to Watch Fahrenheit 9/11

The Christian Science Monitor reports that American troops in Iraq have vocalized the importance of their vote after gathering around screens for a viewing of Michael Moore's controversial 'Fahrenheit 9/11.'

'Everyone's watching it,' a Marine corporal told the CSM, speaking from an outpost in Ramadi that is mortared daily by insurgents. 'It's shaping a lot of people's image of Bush.'

>snip

According to one US soldier the view seems different from the field. ' 9 out of 10 of the people I talk to, it wouldn't matter who ran against Bush - they'd vote for them,' the soldier told CSM. 'People are so fed up with Iraq, and fed up with Bush.'

>snip

'We shouldn't be here,' one Marine infantryman bluntly told the CSM. 'There was no reason for invading this country in the first place. We just came here and and killed a lot of innocent people...I don't enjoy killing women and children, it's not my thing.'
>snip

The troops know the truth...they live it first hand. MKJ

WASHINGTON – Inside dusty, barricaded camps around Iraq, groups of American troops in between missions are gathering around screens to view an unlikely choice from the US box office: "Fahrenheit 9-11," Michael Moore's controversial documentary attacking the commander-in-chief.
"Everyone's watching it," says a Marine corporal at an outpost in Ramadi that is mortared by insurgents daily. "It's shaping a lot of people's image of Bush."

The film's prevalence is one sign of a discernible countercurrent among US troops in Iraq - those who blame President Bush for entangling them in what they see as a misguided war. Conventional wisdom holds that the troops are staunchly pro-Bush, and many are. But bitterness over long, dangerous deployments is producing, at a minimum, pockets of support for Democratic candidate Sen. John Kerry, in part because he's seen as likely to withdraw American forces from Iraq more quickly.

snippity snip snip

Nobody I know wants Bush," says an enlisted soldier in Najaf, adding, "This whole war was based on lies." Like several others interviewed, his animosity centered on a belief that the war lacked a clear purpose even as it took a tremendous toll on US troops, many of whom are in Iraq involuntarily under "stop loss" orders that keep them in the service for months beyond their scheduled exit in order to keep units together during deployments.

" 9 out of 10 of the people I talk to, it wouldn't matter who ran against Bush - they'd vote for them," said a US soldier in the southern city of Najaf, seeking out a reporter to make his views known. "People are so fed up with Iraq, and fed up with Bush."

17. I've been thinking for the last couple of days about the
families of our troops and how they will probably vote. I figure that if there are 100,000 troops in Iraq, that means many more hundreds of thousands of relatives back home who are not agreeing with the way things are going over there and the reasons their loved ones were sent there. There is no way Bush can win this election--that is legally.

25. Sadly, I’ve seen a few families that continue to support * and the war.
I think they’re in denial. And I can understand why... they don’t want to believe that their family member died for a false war. I don’t like to reflect on it too much because it breaks my heart and makes my blood boil.

that our military is allowing our troops to watch Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9-11?"

And the Christian Science Monitor quotes some of our troops as saying:

40. Hmm. The US military showed F9/11 to the troops? Sounds like a warning...
It seems odd but I suppose the rule-makers couldn't stop this movie since denying it to the troops would only raise more ruckus and delay the inevitable.

Perhaps the brass are disgusted and warning the ranks why they are really in Iraq to help them survive the bad situation.

Yeah! I believe it is probably the officers more than enlisted that support Bush. They are pretty well paid. Luckily my son-n-law a officer in the air force is a dem, so is my daughter, they will both vote! They say other officers seem to be for Bush.

My daughter isn't very political but she and her husband met Bill Clinton at book signing a few months ago and proudly display his book. He talked to Kyle about being in the military. Kyle loves to talk about it.

Internet acquaintances say they have viewed bootleg copies in the UK...I can't see our govt. authorizing actual distributed copies to air on a base.

Even if they are bootleg copies, MM probably not mind, so long as his message gets out, especially to overseas voters.
