Former Anchor (Walter Cronkite): CBS Report 'Embarassing'
Associated Press

BOSTON - Former CBS anchorman Walter Cronkite called the network's report questioning President Bush's Vietnam-era National Guard service "embarrassing" but urged patience until an investigation is complete.

"We must wait while CBS management conduct the investigation they have promised. We can then decide what our reaction should be," said Cronkite, 87, who was in Boston on Thursday night to receive an award.

"The reaction at the moment, of course, is embarrassment for everyone who is connected to CBS, and that embarrassment, I hope, will be squashed in time as we know what happened," he said.

Cronkite's successor, Dan Rather apologized Monday for relying on questionable documents to support the Sept. 8 "60 Minutes" story.

1. I agree. We should wait for the investigation to conclude.
And I hope that in that investigation, we discover who the identity of the author of those documents.

2. Couldn't agree more with Walter
However, putting someone from Reagan and Bush administration in charge of the investigation spells Doom for Rather and possibly CBS. Why can't the last bastion of halfway decent reporting be left alone and go after the Liar in chief instead.

8. Re: Dick Thornburg
Fame is fleeting and I have to confess that I don't remember much about Thornburg other than that he had a pretty straight-up reputation. He wasn't much of a partisan lightning rod. Given the circumstances, CBS probably had to put a big league Republican into the mix to avoid charges of a whitewash. Unless someone can raise a substantive objection, I'd guess Thornburg is a pretty good choice.

I don't know anything about the politics of the other guy, the retired ABC honcho. Obviously he brings network credentials but, being from a competitor, can't be accused of hometown bias. Don't know about his politics, though.

There are careers and egos on the line, so a lot of the principals are clamming up. That's not good. The inquiry needs to be quick, thorough, and definitive. Let's get to the bottom of this asap. That's the only way to stop the anti-Kerry speculation. I want the truth NOW.

For the record, I'm not afraid of the truth because I don't believe anyone in the Kerry campaign would be reckless enough to have been involved with forged documents. (And they would have done a better job if they had.) My guess is the forger was some homegrown Texas nutball, possibly Burkett but if not, someone swimming in the same swamp.

3. With due respect to Walter, have you ever heard Bush, Cheney,
Rice, Powell, Rumsfeld express any embarrassment for the lies that got us thrust into a war that has killed thousands of people? Or for that matter, has Bush expressed any embarrassment for not coming clean with the same documents he calls phony?

4. Being a student pilot, 2 years ago I asked where is aWol's personal

pilot's log book and where are his flight instructors comments on what, where, and quality of pilot aWol was? I don't watch much TV but anyway, to this date I've never heard one TV, radio, or internet source ask these questions. It's so basic. Are our police detectives, FBI and CIA investigators as incompetent as media investigators? Is that why the crime rate is so high in America?

No pilot would ever throw away his log book especially a rich candy ass family's child.

I can still remember most of my classmates and teachers from third to sixth grade but no one can remember aWol 15 years later in a period in his life? The only explanation for this whole event is the media is controlled by immoral sources who are directing a cover-up.

5. Crimes committed by white people are far more difficult to
prove because those crimes are left to private individuals to prove. (Torts) While crimes committed by blacks and minorities are the focus of our criminal justice system.

Lots of white affluent communities which are run by unscrupulous people and there's not a thing a person can do about it, because the courts are reluctant to rule against one of their own.

9. The whole point of those planted fake documents was to destroy CBS'
credibility before the Niger yellowcake expose came out. Mission accomplished! The "investigators" will never tell us which GOP whore provided them.

10. Dan Rather's forged papers didn't kill anybody....
bush's forged papers have killed over 1,000 US kids, injured for life over 3,000 young US kids, killed over 20,000 innocent Iraqi children, Moms, Dads, Grandparents, sisters and brothers.

With the media's help, and religious ignorance, bush and criminals have killed democracy in this country.

11. WTF! Where was the outrage over Colin Powell's lie when he
addressed the U.N. Security Council? I'm more than sure you might google something up, 'eh?

I find it strange that you pop up with these knee jerk responses from a no where news source Mr. Freddie Stubbs.
