HUNTINGTON WOODS, MICH. - American legal investigators have discovered evidence of abuse, torture and rape throughout the U.S.-run prison system in Iraq. A Michigan legal team meeting with former detainees in Baghdad during an August fact-finding mission gathered evidence supporting claims of prisoner abuse at some 25 U.S.-run detention centers, most of them so far not publicly mentioned as being embroiled in the Iraq torture scandal.

1. Donald Rumsfeld is dusting off his prior script and is practicing...
...his golly, gee whiz and gosh routine as well as showing various surprised, shocked and dismayed expressions on his wrinkled brow. The hand motions with 90 degree inward turned flat hands are also being rehearsed as he plans for yet another busy week in front of congressional review panels. He has his brief case stuffed with papers to show how busy he and his staff have been with their own investigation and is preparing to counter that there may have been 53 additional bad apples in the barrel, but compared to the other 139947 other distinguished troops serving the people of Iraq it would be unfair to tar everyone with the same corrupt brush. Besides, his Rolex tells him that he needs to be at another meeting in 15 minutes and really needs the panel to move along quickly so he can go about with the important business of defending the United States against all enemies.

2. Yup. He and his boss, I call him the Prince of Abu Ghraib, believe
torture is fine so long as we are the ones doing the torturing. 9/11 justifies anything, in their minds.

Unfortunatley about 49% of the country agrees with them. I hope they all burn in hell for it.

11. No, torture is legal if Bush says it is!
And remember, by torturing Iraqis, we can prevent terrorism in the US!

3. This is why terrorists are beheading their prisoners.
They wanted the women prisoners released.
I knew this Abu Ghraib shit would slam us big-time.
We're just getting at the tip of the abuse.

God, I am ashamed of our country.

13. What is so weird is that no American troops have been 'captured'
Or, at least, none that we know of, since the one who got beheaded right after Abu Graib story broke. I wonder if that's really true (that none have been captured) or whether some have been but CentCom isn't telling truth.

17. Good question. Bet they don't walk around down town Baghdad looking for
a drink. And I'll bet what happened in Iraq will have some effect on every shore leave every American soldier takes for the next century.

19. for the next century . . . so sad
I spend a lot of time thinking about how to undo the harm that has been done (or whether it is even possible). BushCo unlocked a Pandora's Box and it's hard to see any positive outcome now that the dogs of war have been loosed upon the world.

For example, I wonder whether the world would have been better off if, after 9/11, we had done nothing military but instead used existing international treaties and law enforcement to apprehend those responsible and bring them before a World Court of Justice.

At an even deeper level, I wonder whether, after 9/11, instead of taking a retributive tack, we had instead chosen to look inside ourselves to see how our foreign policy choices over the past 50 years had contributed to the 'context' for 9/11, the world might not be a far better place to inhabit.

This 'what might have been' thinking is not particularly productive, I know, and it makes me really sad to think of all the additional suffering we've caused since 9/11.

The question is: how do we break the cycle of retribution?

23. You are oh so right, IMO. If Bush were half the Christian he claims to be
he would have set aside the Old Testament - "An eye for an eye", and instead, remembered the New Testament:

"Turn the other cheek"

"Love thyne enemies"

"Vengeance is mine sayeth the Lord"

Islamic radicals have valid grievances with the West. They have chosen the wrong weapon to redress those grievances. They could learn a lot from Martin Luther King and Ghandi. Non violent civil disobediance and massive protests would be much more effective than suicide bombers.

George Bush says we cannot even discuss the root causes of terrorism until we kill all the terrorists. This is insanity. The only question is how long it will take the security moms of America to figure this out.

4. This is so sick
What has Bush turned our military into? A bunch of thugs and bullies. A bunch of perverted rapists and abusers. Way to go W?

Only a traitor would do this to his own country? He has destroyed our reputation and standing as the leader of the free world. The US is seen has a disgrace, run by international war criminals.

In the meantime, Bush and CO tighten their grip on power. Don't expect them to give it up very easily or to be able to bring any of them to justice. They will destroy us and the rest of the world, if they think it will insure their survival.

Ummmm, I guess it may just be me, but a lot of the Bush supporters here seem like the type to rape and torture. Not even to get information, just for fun. May be just my view though.

5. Civil Lawsuit
Plantiffs in civil court. Looking for $$ from contractors. No criminal charges or data to backup claims (photos)linked.

Source is not MSM, fringe at best. Don't see anything in lexis-nexis db with this persons name on it. Haven't filed anything in court yet.

May be legit but is on shaky ground.

BTW they were chopping heads before abu-graib, Pearle, and others were killed on tape to get attention before abu-graib broke.

No names of investigators.

Any one got a cross link from a real newswire?

10. Not really, would be surprised
Edited on Fri Sep-24-04 03:51 PM by Radius
but lexis nexis would list it if it were filed in any court in the us.

It could also have lots of information made public through discovery.

I still don't see it as a filed motion. maybe they filed on someone elses name. The contractors listed aren't named either.

Edit: clarify subject line

6. Thanks for posting this information.
It looks as if the picture is eventually going to come out. They won't be able to hide it forever. According to this article, there are people from the outside who are busy looking into all of the known prisons, most of them being kept from our awareness.

Could NOT accept the news that people in Iraq have actually awakened and discovered their entire TOWNS have been encircled by barbed wire and that everyone is being kept within, and investigated. This is simply horrifying. Just like a nightmare.

Sure hope someone can break through the silence far sooner than the administration wants. They shouldn't be able to conduct their own secret war with complete, unchecked, freewheeling authority. Shame on these bastards.

26. I don't wonder..
I have known for many years having studied what the CIA has done to advance Capitalism and screwed over democracies.

The Prison Torture situation is being kept under a tight lid because to expose the system wide torture could bring down the entire US Govt. The Pres., VP, Sec. of Defense, State Dept., CIA, Pentagon and the Military are all guilty of War Crimes. This will be kept under wraps. The photos and videos will never surface unless from private sources.

The majority of Americans have been duped into thinking that the situation was only a few bad apples that have been identified and are being tried and will be punished; case closed. A mass Cover Up is in force by both parties because it bodes ill for Amerika.
