Cleveland Named Poorest Big City
Cleveland Named Poorest Big City

CLEVELAND, Sept. 24, 2004

(AP) Crushed by the loss of steel and other manufacturing jobs, Cleveland has ranked high for poverty before - but never No. 1.

That changed when a report from the U.S. Census Bureau recently rated it has the nation's poorest big city, putting it ahead of Detroit, Miami and Newark, N.J....

Hundreds of teachers and other workers were laid off from city schools and officials are pushing a $68 million tax increase on the November ballot to try to ease some of the schools' financial needs.

With a poverty rate of 31.3 percent in 2003, Cleveland stands out even in Ohio: Cincinnati's was 21.1 percent, Toledo 20.3 percent and Columbus 16.5 percent.

The overall poverty rate in the United States was 12.7 percent, according to the survey released Aug. 26.

1. Thanks for taking the title off our hands
I live in Miami, and we once had that title. . .I guess it's an effect of living in Bushworld.

2. Born and raised in the Cleveland area....
but I now live in a suburb of Detroit. These two cities are the epitome of the huge gap between the rich and the poor. It all started in the Reagan era. I'm old enough to remember when it wasn't always like that.

4. I was raised in the suburbs of Cleveland. Just about 5 years ago it was a
shining example of what all cities in transition could be. Clinton would always point to it for its progress.

BushInc is killing that city. Taft is helping him do it.

5. Me too, I still think Greater Cleveland is a terriffic place
I remember it in the 40's to 1960, and the downtown was viable and exciting, although run down toward the end. I remember the great smoking steel mills in the flats, and all was well. Sort of.

Still love to go back and visit.

3. "Bush to Cleveland -- Drop Dead!"
Reminded me of the famous headline that helped Gerald Ford lose in '76.
