About 180 soldiers from a Quincy-based National Guard unit are being called to active duty in the Middle East.

About 150 of the soldiers being called up will be retrained as a security forces unit, performing duties similar to those normally done by military police, Danielson said.

The troops will go to a mobilization station within a few days after that, and eventually will go overseas in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Danielson said. He would not say specifically where the troops will be sent, other than the Middle East.

The mission for the approximately 30 other soldiers being called up will include staffing a rear area operations center and coordinating security for rear area operations, Danielson said.

The activation date is Sunday, Oct. 10, mobilization date is November 19. Expected to leave for middleast shortly after that.

There is another story in the same paper about the funeral of a Marine killed in Iraq last month. 20 years old. The story in the paper is big, photos of funeral and everything. But the story is not available online.

If so, here's the first rule of war - do everything you can to get home in one piece.
